Gastritis is an inflammation of the gastric mucosal lining. It is commonly experienced by university students as a result of unhealthy lifestyle patterns. Irregular sleep schedules and excessive coffee consumption can increase gastric acid production and make the gastric lining more vulnerable to irritation. This condition is further influenced by students’ living arrangements, as many reside independently in boarding houses, leading to less supervised lifestyle habits. Gastritis was recorded as the second most common health problem at the Universitas Sumatera Utara Polyclinic in 2024. Therefore, a study on the factors related to the incidenceof gastritis in students treatment at the university of north sumatera polyclinic in 2025 is necessary. This research employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. The study was conducted at the Universitas Sumatera Utara Polyclinic from August 2025 to December 2025. A total of 96 respondents were selected using accidental sampling. The proportion of gastritis cases among students reached 53.1%. Based on the univariate analysis, the highest proportions were observed among students aged >20 years (54.2%), females (69.8%), those not living with their families (79.2%), those who did not consume coffee (57.3%), and those with poor sleep quality (53.1%). The bivariate analysis showed significant associations between gastritis occurrence and sex (p-value = 0.004), living arrangement (p-value = 0.001), coffee consumption (p-value = 0.011), and sleep quality (p-value < 0.001). In contrast, age (p-value = 0.166) was not significantly associated with gastritis occurrence. Students, particularly those living away from their families, are encouraged to regulate sleep patterns, limit coffee consumption, and maintain healthy dietary habits. Alternative strategies to caffeine, such as 10–30 minute power naps, may be used to sustain stamina.
