Design of a Single-Stage Semi-Continuous Anaerobic Digester with Sludge Recirculation Using Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) as Substrate
Abstract
Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) has the potential to be utilized as a renewable energy source through anaerobic digestion. This research focuses on the design of a single-stage semi-continuous anaerobic digester system with sludge recirculation as the initial stage in developing a POME-based biogas reactor. The design includes determining the reactor capacity, pumping system, operating pressure, energy requirements, and heating system integration. The digester is designed using a 1500 L tank with a working volume of 1080 L and a gas chamber of 420 L. The recirculation system utilizes internal hoses, an overflow pipe, a ball valve, a pressure gauge, and a pump with a minimum pressure of 1.53 psi and a fluid flow rate of 3.46 L/m. Functional testing demonstrated that the system can operate stably for recirculation, temperature control and produces 0.449 m³ of biogas. This design demonstrates that a semi-continuous digester system with sludge recirculation can be built economically and is ready to be used as the basis for developing reactors on a household or small-scale industry.
