Resiliensi Budaya Tradisi Solu Bolon Melalui Olahraga Dayung Sebagai Identitas Budaya Batak Di Era Modern Di Kecamatan Pangururan Kabupaten Samosir
Cultural Resilience of the Solu Bolon Tradition Through Rowing as a Batak Cultural Identity in the Modern Era in Pangururan District, Samosir Regency
Abstract
The Solu Bolon is a type of traditional boat originating from the Batak people.
Currently, this boat is increasingly forgotten and its form has changed due to the
influence of modernization. This study aims to provide an understanding of the
history of the Solu Bolon tradition, which is part of Batak cultural identity.
Furthermore, this study also analyzes the relationship between the Solu Bolon
tradition and modern rowing. Another focus is to explain the contributions of the
community, society, and government in preserving this tradition in Pangururan
District. The method used in this study was qualitative with an ethnographic
approach. Data collection techniques included participatory observation, in-depth
interviews, and documentation studies. The research findings indicate that the Solu
Bolon has evolved from a traditional means of transportation to a form of
competitive rowing. This sport is now featured in the Lake Toba Festival and the
Samosir Regency anniversary celebrations as a way to maintain its relevance in the
modern era. As a symbol of cultural heritage, Solu Bolon holds deep historical,
spiritual, and social significance, and was formerly used in various traditional
ceremonies, as a means of water transportation, and in cultural performances.
Despite efforts to preserve it through sport, there are still many limitations in the
facilities available to athletes. Rowing, rooted in Solu Bolon, has proven to be a
way to counter the influence of global cultural homogenization. This is achieved by
reviving cultural awareness among the younger generation through cooperation
(Marsiadapari), collective spirit, and pride in Batak cultural identity.
