dc.description.abstractThe use of plastic waste as an additive in asphalt mixtures has become an alternative to improving pavement performance while reducing environmental impact. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding Styrofoam and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) as additives in asphalt mixtures on the characteristics of Asphalt Concrete Wearing Course (AC-WC). The research was conducted through experimental methods at the Highway Engineering Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, University of North Sumatera, and the Laboratory of the National Road Implementation Agency, Medan. Styrofoam was added at variations of 7%, 8%, and 9%, while PET was added at variations of 5%, 7%, and 10%. The addition of Styrofoam and PET to the mixture was carried out using the wet method, in which the plastic was incorporated into the hot asphalt and stirred until evenly blended. The tests conducted included asphalt physical tests, Marshall tests, Wheel Tracking Machine tests, and asphalt extraction tests. The results showed that the addition of Styrofoam and PET increased the softening point, specific gravity, and Marshall stability, while all other Marshall parameters remained within specifications. In the Wheel Tracking test, the addition of Styrofoam and PET resulted in increased deformation, indicating reduced rutting resistance. The extraction test results confirmed that the asphalt content and aggregate gradation met the requirements of SNI 8279:2016. The optimum modified asphalt mixture was achieved at a combination of 9% Styrofoam + 10% PETen_US
