This frame work used to analyze the performance description is cultural performance
theory, while the analysis of the function and analisys scale of kulcapi music applies
the theory of use and function and the weighted scale theory. Kulcapi is a traditional
stringed instrument of the Karo ethnic group, typically consisting of two strings and
made from hardwood such as jackfruit, juhar, or tualang wood. The research employs
a descriptive qualitative method. The theoretical framework used to analyze the
performance description is cultural performance theory, while the analysis of the
function and structure of kulcapi music applies the theory of use and function and the
weighted scale theory. The kulcapi is utilized in Sunday worship at GBKP Km.4
Padang Bulan Medan to accompany Karo ethnic songs, namely “Meriah Kal Ukurta
Mujikenca,” “Babalah Persembahen Simerimna,” and “Kam Simbelin.” The function
of kulcapi music in the GBKP Km.4 Padang Bulan Medan worship includes
emotional expression, aesthetic enjoyment, communication, the implementation of
social norms, the legitimization of social institutions, the support of cultural
continuity and stability, and the reinforcement of social integration. The melodic
structure of the kulcapi in accompanying GBKP Km.4 Padang Bulan worship
consists of the basic keys E minor and E-flat major. The dominant intervals found in
the three songs are major seconds and perfect primes. The pitch ranges are as
follows: “Meriah Kal Ukurta Mujikenca” ranges from B to C (octave), “Kam
Simbelin” ranges from B♭ to B♭ (octave), and “Babalah Persembahen Simerimna”
ranges from B to B (octave).
