dc.description.abstractThis study aims to determine the traditions, functions, and meanings of traditional wedding attire in the Sibolga Coastal community. The theories employed in this research are Danandjaja’s folklore theory and Peirce’s semiotic theory. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The results of this study reveal eleven types of ornaments on the groom's attire, categorized into three parts: head, body, and feet. The head section consists of four items: Detar, Ikkek, Layang-Layang, and Buah Gombak. The body section includes five items: Oto, Manik Gadang, Kabek Pinggang, Baju Rajo, and Sewa/Rencong. The feet section consists of two items: Sungkek Tuju Biron and Sarawa Baroacci. Regarding the bride's attire, there are eighteen types of ornaments divided into three parts: head, body, and feet. The head section comprises seven items: Sanggu Gadang, Goyang-Goyang Batingkek, Banang Bagubak, Layang-Layang, Garak Gampo, and Goyang-Goyang Karambi. The body section consists of nine items: Kendang-Kendang, Manik Tangan, Rago-Rago, Kabek Pinggang, Rendo Paladang, Tokka, Aguk, Nago-Nago, and Kebaya. The feet section includes two items: Kain Sungkek and Galang Kaki. The function and meaning of the traditional attire for both men and women are to serve as a form of self-covering, while the meanings embodied in the wedding attire include luxury, authority, and beautyen_US
