The Function and Meaning of Batak Toba Spiritual Songs in Worship at HKBP Pardomuan Church and GBI Mawar Saron, Simalingkar B Medan
Abstract
This study aims to describe and analyze the function of Batak Toba spiritual songs in charismatic worship at GBI Mawar Saron and in worship services at HKBP Pardomuan Simalingkar B Medan. It also seeks to identify and compare the meanings contained in Batak Toba spiritual songs used in charismatic and HKBP worship contexts, as well as to understand how the functions and meanings of these songs have transformed when performed in different worship settings. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method through direct observation, interviews, and documentation at the research sites. Theoretical frameworks used in this study include Alan P. Merriam’s theory of musical functions and Jean-Jacques Nattiez’s theory of musical meaning analysis. The findings indicate that the songs Marolop-olop, Pasu-pasu, and Somba Ma Jahowa have undergone changes in terms of musical presentation and contextual use within charismatic worship, whereas in HKBP Pardomuan services, these songs are still preserved in a more traditional form.
