Abstract
Background. Neurological diseases have a high prevalence in hospitalized patients, with varying prognoses influenced by several factors, one of which is the patient's nutritional status. Therefore, a nutritional assessment is necessary to early detect the risk of malnutrition in neurology inpatients and to assist in the development and implementation of nutritional intervention plans. Aim. This study aims to determine the nutritional status of neurology inpatients on admission at Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis Hospital, USU Medan. Methods. This study is descriptive with a cross-sectional approach and used medical records at Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis Hospital, USU, Medan, from 2020 to 2024. Subjects were grouped based on age, gender, diagnosis, and nutritional status. Nutritional assessments were conducted using the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) form. Results. A total of 350 samples were obtained, with the largest age category being adults (18-59 years), namely 176 samples (50.3%), and a higher gender prevalence in women, namely 176 samples (50.3%). The largest distribution of diagnoses in this study was ischemic stroke with a total of 217 patients (62%). Based on nutritional status, 302 samples (86.3%) were included in the good nutritional status category, 42 samples (12%) were included in the undernourished category, and 6 samples (1.7%) were included in the severe malnutrition category. Conclusion. Of all neurology inpatients at Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis Hospital, USU Medan, the highest prevalence of ischemic stroke was 62%.
