Anna’s Personality Through Sigmund Freud’s Theory in Jodi Picoult’s Novel My Sister’s Keeper

Abstract

The title of this paper is ―Anna’s Personality Through Sigmund Freud’s Theo-ry in Jodi Picoult’s Novel My Sister’s Keeper‖ is about Anna Fitzgerald‘s per-sonality as the main character in Jodi Picoult‘s novel My Sister’s Keeper. The main focus of this research is to identify and to describe Anna‘s personality which related to id, ego, and superego. This research uses the psychoanalytical approach through Sigmund Freud‘s theory. To describe this paper, the writer uses the library research and the analytical descriptive method and assisted with some articles and websites. From the result of this research, the writer can conclude that the urge of id can make someone put their common sense and morality aside to fulfill their libido, on contrary if the super-ego appears it makes someone to prioritize others than their own matters and the ego side is the middle ground of the two. In this paper, super-ego manages to beat the urge of id and ego because Anna is prioritizing the problem of her own sister, Kate rather than her own problem.

Judul kertas karya ini adalah ―Anna’s Personality Through Sigmund Freud’s Theory in Jodi Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper”, membahas tentang kepribadian Anna Fitzgerald sebagai tokoh utama dalam novel My Sister’s Keeper karya Jodi Picoults. Fokus pada penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi dan mendeskripsikan kepribadian Anna yang berkaitan dengan id, ego, dan superego. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan psikoanalisis dan teori kepribadian menurut Sigmund Freud. Untuk mendukung penelitian ini, digunakan metode riset pustaka dan deskriptif analitik serta dibantu dengan artikel dan situs web. Hasil dari penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa dorongan id membuat seseorang mengenyampingkan akal sehat dan moral demi memenuhi libido nya, sebaliknya jika super-ego muncul cenderung membuat orang lebih mementingkan kepentingan orang lain daripada kepentingannya sendiri dan sisi ego lah yang berusaha menengahi dua ego yang ber-lawanan. Dalam penelitian ini, super-ego berhasil mengalahkan dorongan id dan ego, karena Anna lebih mementingkan kepentingan kakaknya Kate, daripada kepent-ingannya sendiri.
