Prosodic Length in English Utterances by The Students of English Literature at University of Sumatera Utara

Abstract

This thesis is entitled Prosodic Length in English Utterances by the Students of English literature at University of Sumatera Utara. The English words in terms of interrogative mood, imperative mood, and declarative mood, in case of prosodic length become the problem for non native speaker especially from the students in English literature at University of Sumatera Utara to pronounce and to hear. The writer is interested to describe the prosodic length and the reveal the differences of prosodic length that found between native and the students of English literarture B 2014 at University of Sumatera Utarausing a program named Praat version 6.0.02. the differences are discussed using acoustic phonetic study which reveals the acoustic features of sound such as frequency, duration, and intensity. This study using Praat theory by Paul Beorsma, the founder of Praat and acoustic theory. This research is using descriptive-qualitative as iths method. From this research it is found that the prosodic length described with sound wave and contours in Praat and result of the description are different and the differences are varied. The values of the prosodic length are represented by number in Praat and their results are different. Overall, the result shows that the duration of native speaker is shorterthan the students of English literarture at Uviniversity of Sumatera Utara.

Skripsi ini berjudul Prosodic Length in English Utterances by the Students of English literature at University of Sumatera Utara. kata-kata dalam bahasa inggris didalam bentuk kalimat pernyataan, kalimat perintah and kalimat pernyataan dalam dalam durasi prosody menjadi masalah bagi mahasiswa sastra inggris Universitas Sumatera Utara dalam pengucapan dan didengar. Peneliti tertarik untuk mendeskripsikan durasi dalam prosodi dan menemukan perbedaan-perbedaan dalam durasi yang ditemukan antara penutur asli dan Non penutur asli dari Indonesia menggunakan sebuah program bernama Praat. Perbedaan tersebut dibahas menggunakan kajian fonetik akustik yang membongkar fitur akustik dari bunyi seperti frekuensi, durasi, dan intensitas. Skripsi ini menggunakan teori praat oleh Paul Beorsma, penemu Praat dan teori fonetik akustik. Skripsi ini menggunakan deskriptif-kualitatif sebagai metofde. Dari penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa durasi prosodi dideskripsikan dengan gelombang suara dan garis-garis bentuk pada Praat dan Praat dan hasil dari deskripsi tersebut berbeda satu sama lain dan perbedaannya bervariasi. Nilai dari durasi prosodi dipresentasikan dengan angka pada Paraat dan hasilnya berbeda. Perbedaannya bervariasi, panjang durasi penutur asli cenderung lebih pendek dari pada Non penutur asli .
