A Multimodal Analysis of The Children’s Picture Books Wonderful World of English

Abstract

This thesis entitled “A Multimodal Analysis of The Children‟s Picture Books Wonderful World of English”. The objective of this thesis is to find out Textual Metafunction and Compositional Meaning and to describe the verbal text and the visual image contained in the children‘s picture books series Wonderful World of English namely On the Move and Marvellous Monsters. For analyzing the verbal text, is used the language metafunction Halliday, while for the visual analysis, is used by the Unsworth‘s theory of Visual Narrative based from Kress and van Leeuwen‘s theory. The textual metafunction devided into theme and rheme, while composition meaning divided into intermodal integrated (layout), framing, and focus. The data used in this research are verbiage and image taken from that children‘s picture books. The methodology used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. Multimodal is defined as the semiotic meanings that can be made from the interrelationship of two or more modes, both verbal and nonverbal, play an important role in making meaning. There are two results of the study showed that the dominant element of the textual metafunction is topical theme that has 180 themes from 185 total clauses, and 192 total rhemes. While the dominant elements of compositional meanings is complementary layout in intermodal integration, unbound image in framing, and centrifocal focus group in focus. There are relations between textual elements and compositional elements in making meaning from these children‘s picture books.

Judul penelitian ini adalah “A Multimodal Analysis of The Children‟s Picture Books Wonderful World of English”. Penelitian skripsi ini bertujuan untuk menemukan Metafungsi Tekstual dan Makna Komposisi dan menjelaskan teks verbal dan gambar visual yang terkandung dalam seri buku bergambar anak-anak Wonderful World of English yaitu On the Move dan Marvellous Monsters. Untuk menganalisis teks verbal digunakan metafungsi bahasa Halliday, sedangkan untuk menganalisis gambar visual digunakan teori Narasi Visual Unsworth yang berdasarkan dari teori Kress dan van Leuween. Metafungsi tekstual terbagi menjadi tema dan rema, sedangkan makna komposisi terbagi menjadi intermoda terintegrasi (tata letak), pembingkaian, dan fokus. Data yang digunakan adalah kata-kata dan gambar yang diambil dari buku bergambar anak tersebut. Metodologi yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif deskriptif. Multimodal didefinisikan sebagai makna semiotik yang dapat dibuat dari keterkaitan dua mode atau lebih, baik verbal dan nonverbal, yang memainkan peran penting dalam membuat makna. Terdapat dua hasil penelitian yang menunjukkan bahwa elemen metafungsi tekstual yang dominan adalah tema topikal yang memiliki 180 tema dari 185 jumlah klausa, dan 192 jumlah rema. Sedangkan elemen makna komposisi yang dominan adalah tata letak pelengkap dalam intermoda terintegrasi, gambar tidak terikat dalam pembingkaian, dan kelompok fokus centrifocal dalam fokus. Terdapat hubungan antara unsur-unsur tekstual dan unsur-unsur komposisi dalam membuat makna pada buku bergambar anak-anak ini.
