Effects of Child Abuse on The Main Character of Constance Briscoe’s Ugly

Abstract

This thesis entitled Effects of Child Abuse on the Main Character of Constance Briscoe’s Ugly. The source of data in this research is novel Ugly by Constance Briscoe. It is a true story of the author‟s childhood. The purpose of this thesis to analyze the types of child abuse and the effects of child abuse experienced by the main character. Clare was always abused by her own mother since she is 6 years old. There are four types of abuse that happen in the novel, such as physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse and neglect. All the abuse that happened make Clare feel depression, anxiety and she tries to commit suicide. In this thesis the writer used theory by Richard J. Gelles and use descriptive qualitative method for analyzing data.

Skripsi ini berjudul Effects of Child Abuse on the Main Character of Constance Briscoe’s Ugly. Sumber data pada penelitian ini adalah novel Ugly karangan Constance Briscoe. Novel ini adalah kisah nyata masa kecil pengarang. Tujuan dari penulisan skripsi ini adalah untuk menganalisis jenis pelecehan dan efek pada pelecehan yang di alami oleh tokoh utama. Clare selalu di lecehkan oleh ibu kandung nya sejak Ia berusia 6 tahun. Ada 4 jenis kekerasan yang terjadi pada novel ini, seperti pelecehan fisik, pelecehan emosional, pelecehan seksual dan penelantaran. Semua pelecehan yang terjadi membuat Clare merasa depresi, cemas dan dia mencoba untuk bunuh diri. Pada skripsi ini penulis menggunakan teori karangan Richard J. Gelles dan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk menganalisis data.
