    Abstract
The thesis entitled “The Politeness Principle Used in President Barack Obama and Donald J. Trump‟s Inaugural Speeches” describes how the politeness principles functioned in the speech-act by recognizing the types and frequency of it uses in speech. The anaysis of those inaugural speechess was done based on the six maxims proposed by Leech. The data of this descriptive study were collected from the officials website of both speakers. The speeches were fragmented into numbered statements. The maxim was identified on each statement and descriptions were given to mark the categorization of politeness principles. Based on the Leech‟s theory, the six types of maxims are Tact maxim (Tm), Generosity maxim (Gm), Approbation maxim (Apm), Modesty maxim (Mm), Agreement maxim (Agm) and Sympathy maxim (Sm). The findings on the each type of maxims are different. The maxim frequencies of 51 statements of Obama‟ speech are: Apm 16 (31%), Agm 14 (27%), Sm 9 (18%), Tm 6 (12%) and Gm 4 (8%). The maxim frequencies of 52 statements of Trump‟ speech are: Agm 18 (35%), Sm 12 (23%), Gm 11 (21%), Apm 5 (10%), Mm 4 (8%) and Tm 2 (4%). These maxims‟ frequencies show that Approbation maxim and Agreement maxims are mostly found in Obama and Trump‟s inaugural speeches. They implied that both of leaders have different style in applying the politeness principle to convince their hearers. However, the similar result on Agreement maxim frequencies revealed that both Obama and Trump used the same strategy in gaining the support and building the trust of people.

Skripsi yang berjudul „The Politeness Principle Used in President Barack Obama and Donald J. Trump‟s Inaugural Speeches” ini menggambarkan bagaimana politeness principle digunakan dalam pidato pelantikan presiden Amerika Serikat.
