    Speech Functions in The Teacher - Student Classroom Interactions at SMKN 11 Medan

    Abstract
    This thesis entitled Speech Functions in the Teacher-Student Classroom Interactions at SMKN 11 Medan. This thesis deals with speech functions used by teacher and students in classroom interaction at SMKN 11 Medan. The objectives of this study were to indicate the types of speech function in the teacher-student classroom interaction and to describe the pattern of speech function realized in the teacher-student classroom interaction at SMKN 11 Medan. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected by observing, recording the utterances of teacher and eleventh-grade students at SMKN 11 Medan. The data were analyzed based on Systemic Functional Linguistics theory. There were 184 utterances produced as the total number consisting of 53 (28.80%) statement, 78 (42.39%) questions, 10 (5.44%) commands, 1 (0.54%) offer, 35 (19.02%) answers, 6 (3,27) disclaimers, and 1 (0.54%) acknowledgement. The teacher produced 142 (77.17%) utterances and students produced 42 (22.83%) utterances. The result showed that the question was the dominant type of speech functions used by the teacher, and the answer was the dominant type of speech function responses used by the students. The pattern of speech function realized in teacher-student interaction was opening by giving a statement as the information about the topic that is the conditional sentence, what is the conditional sentence, how to use conditional sentence and so on. Then, it is followed by asking a question, and closing with a demanding command to invite the students to do something. In addition, there are four types of speech function response found in classroom interaction expressed by the students in responding to the teacher, they are answer as the dominant type, followed by disclaimer, and acknowledgment.
     
    Skripsi ini berjudul „Speech Functions in the Teacher - Student Classroom Interactions At SMKN 11 Medan‟. Skripsi ini membahas tentang speech function yang digunakan oleh guru dan siswa dalam interaksi kelas di SMKN 11 Medan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan jenis-jenis speech function dalam interaksi guru-siswa di dalam kelas dan untuk menggambarkan pola speech function yang terdapat dalam interaksi guru-siswa di SMKN 11 Medan. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara observasi, kemudian merekam ucapan guru dan siswa kelas sebelas di SMKN 11 Medan. Analisis data dilakukan berdasarkan teori Linguistik Fungsional Sistemik. Terdapat 184 ujaran yang sebagai hasil dari keseluruhan ujaran yang terdiri dari 53 (28,80%) statement, 78 (42,39%) question, 10 (5,44%) command, 1 (0,54%) offer, 35 (19,02%) answer, 6 (3,27%) disclaimer, dan 1 (0,54%) acknowledgment. Guru menghasilkan 142 (77,17%) ujaran dan siswa menghasilkan 42 (22,83%) ujaran. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa question adalah jenis speech function yang dominan digunakan oleh guru, dan answer adalah jenis speech function response yang dominan digunakan oleh siswa. Pola fungsi berbicara yang terdapat dalam interaksi guru-siswa diawali dengan memberikan pernyataan sebagai informasi tentang topik pembelajaran yaitu conditional sentences, apa itu conditional sentences, bagaimana cara menggunakan conditional sentences dan sebagainya. Kemudian diikuti dengan memberikan pertanyaan, dan ditutup dengan perintah untuk mengajak siswa melakukan sesuatu. Selain itu, ada empat jenis speech function response yang ditemukan dalam interaksi kelas yang diungkapkan oleh siswa dalam menanggapi guru, yang terdiri dari answer sebagai tipe dominan yang digunakan, diikuti oleh disclaimer, dan acknowledgment.
