The Interplay Between Visual and Verbal Communication on Selected American News Article by Using Ideational Function and Representational Function

Abstract

This thesis entitled “the interplay between visual and verbal modes of communication of the American news articles” is a study about relationhip and interplay between visual and verbal comunication. The theory which is used in this thesis are a theory proposed by O‟Toole , as well as other resources based on and drawn from Lemke, Kress and van Leeuwn to carry out all the visual analysis and halliday‟s concept of metafunction to carry out all the verbal analisis . the objective of this study : (1) To indicate the ideational and representational function of the American news articles, (2) To indicate the interplay between visual and verbal modes of communication of the American news articles. This thesis is qualitative descriptive research. The result if the analysis is the most frequently process found is Material process in verbal analysis, and action processes in visual analysis.

Tesis ini berjudul "interaksi antara mode komunikasi visual dan verbal dari artikel berita Amerika" adalah studi tentang hubungan dan interaksi antara komunikasi visual dan verbal. Teori yang digunakan dalam tesis ini adalah teori yang dikemukakan oleh O'Toole, serta sumber daya lain berdasarkan dan diambil dari Lemke, Kress dan van Leeuwn untuk melakukan semua analisis visual dan konsep metafungsi halliday untuk melakukan semua analisis verbal. Tujuan dari penelitian ini: (1) Untuk menunjukkan fungsi ideasional dan representasional dari artikel berita Amerika, (2) Untuk menunjukkan interaksi antara mode komunikasi visual dan verbal dari artikel berita Amerika. Tesis ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil jika analisis adalah proses yang paling sering ditemukan adalah proses Material dalam analisis verbal, dan proses tindakan dalam analisis visual.
