Politeness Strategy in University Local Debate Presented by Students of Universities in Medan

Abstract

This thesis discusses about the politeness strategies used in local debate namely National University Debating Championship presented by some universities students in Medan. In this local debate, the participants were given a motion about some issues in the country and tried to discuss the motion and gave their arguments towards the motion. This thesis intends to analyze the types of politeness strategies used by the participants in the local debate and the reason of the used of politeness strategy. The source of data was collected by recording the situation in the debate and the data were the transcription of the video of the local debate University of Sumatera Utara, State University of Medan , University of Muhammadiyah of Sumatera Utara, Pelita Harapan University, Wilmar University, and Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Asing – Persahabatan Internasional Asia. The theory used in this research is politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson. The data then were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative approach. From the data, it was found that the participants used four of types of politeness strategy, they are bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. Moreover, the most dominant strategy used is positive politeness.

Skripsi ini mendiskusikan tentang strategi kesopanan yang digunakan di dalam debat lokal National University Debating Championship yang dipresentasikan oleh beberapa mahasiswa di Medan. Di dalam debat lokal ini, para peserta diberikan topik yang berkaitan dengan isu-isu negara, dan kemudian para peserta mendiskusikan topik tersebut dengan memberikan pendapat mereka. Skripsi ini berusaha menganalisa tipe tipe strategy kesopanan yang digunakan dan alsan dari penggunaannya. Sumber data skripsi ini diperoleh dari rekaman situasi pada saat debat lokal, sedangkan data dari skripsi ini merupakan hasil darit ranskripsi video debat lokal Universitas Sumatera Utara, Universitas Negeri Medan, Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara, Universtas Pelita Harapan, Universitas Wilmar, dan Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Asing–Persahabatan Internasional Asia. Data tersebut kemudian dianalisis dengan menggunakan pendekatan qualitative deskriptif. Dari data tersebut, ditemukan beberapa ujaran yang mengandung strategi kesopanan oleh Brown dan Levinson (1987). Dari data tersebut, ditemukan bahwa peserta debat lokal ini menggunakan empat dari jenis strategi kesopanan, yaitu bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. Strategi yang digunakan paling banyak oleh peserta debat lokal merupakan positive politeness.
