Speech Acts Found in Sarcastic Utterances in Speechless TV Series

Abstract

The research entitled “Speech Acts Found in Sarcastic Utterances in Speechless TV Series”. The aims of this research are to identify the types of sarcastic utterances, to find out speech acts in sarcastic utterances, and to describe how sarcastic utterances realized in Speechless TV series. The research applies qualitative method and the data are analyzed descriptively. The data are classified based on the theory of sarcasm of Attardo (2001) and the theory of speech acts of Searle (1976). Based on Attardo’s theory, there are six types of sarcasm that can be considered as sarcastic utterances, they are: Group Affiliation, Sophistication, Evaluation, Politeness, Persuasive Aspect, and Retract ability. According to Searle’s theory, there are five types of speech acts, they are: Declarations, Representatives, Expressives, Directives, Commissives. The results of this research show that there are 45 sarcastic utterances have been found in Speechless TV series. After being analyzed, there are 5 utterances as the group affiliation, 4 utterances as the sophistication, 11 utterances as the evaluation, 13 utterances as the politeness, 4 utterances as the persuasive aspect, and 8 utterances as the retract ability. There are also four speech acts performed in the 45 sarcastic utterances found, they are as follow: 22 representatives speech act, 12 expressive speech act, 8 directives speech act, and 3 commissives speech act. The result of this study shows that context and intended meaning of speaker’s speech play important role to convey the realization of sarcastic utterances. Sarcastic utterances are commonly realized into four kinds, they are commonly done by sarcastically stating something to evaluate hearer’s behavior and state, commanding hearer to do or to believe something, playing with language to indirectly express feeling, and using less damage effect of diction to avoid hearer’s feeling threatened in a forthcoming occasion. The research was conducted for more deep understanding to readers about sarcastic utterances that found in Speechless TV series’ script.

Penelitian ini berjudul “Speech Acts Found in Sarcastic Utterances in Speechless TV Series.” Tujuan dari penelitian ini ialah untuk mengidentifikasi tipe ucapan sarkastik, untuk menemukan tindak tutur pada ucapan sarkastik yang ditemukan, dan untuk menggambarkan bagaimana ucapan sarkastik terwujud dalam seri TV Speechless. Penelitian ini menerapkan metode kualitatif dan data dianalisis secara deskriptif. Data diklasifikasikan berdasarkan teori sarkasme oleh Attardo (2001) dan teori tindak tutur oleh Searle (1976). Berdasarkan teori Attardo, terdapat enam tipe sarkasme yang bisa dipertimbangkan untuk mengidentifikasi ucapan sebagai sarkastik, yaitu: Group Affiliation, Sophistication, Evaluation, Politeness, Persuasive Aspect, dan Retract ability. Menurut teori oleh Searle, ada lima tipe tindak tutur, yaitu: Deklaratif, Representatif, Ekspresif, Direktif, dan Komisif. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ditemukannya 45 ucapan sarkastik di seri TV Speechless. Setelah analisis dilakukan, ada 5 ucapan sebagai group affiliation, 4 ucapan sebagai sophistication, 11 ucapan sebagai evaluation, 13 ucapan sebagai politeness, 4 ucapan sebagai persuasive aspect, dan 8 ucapan sebagai retract ability. Ditemukan juga empat tindak tutur yang dilakukan saat bertutur, yaitu: 22 tindak tutur representatif, 12 tindak tutur ekspresif, 8 tindak tutur direktif, dan 3 tindak tutur komisif. Hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa konteks dan makna yang ingin dimaksudkan oleh penutur memegang peran penting dalam pewujudan ucapan sarkastik dalam penuturan. Ucapan sarkasik umumnya terwujud dalam empat jenis, keempat jenis ini biasanya dilakukan dengan menyampaikan suatu hal secara sarkastik untuk mengevaluasi perilaku dan kondisi pendengar, memerintahkan pendengar untuk melakukan atau memercayai sesuatu, menggunakan ragam bahasa untuk mengekspresikan perasaan secara tidak langsung, dan menggunakan diksi yang memberikan sedikit dampak kepada pendengar guna mencegah adanya perasaan terancam. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk memberikan pemahaman mendalam kepada pembaca mengenai ucapan sarkastik dan tindak tutur yang ditemukan pada skrip seri TV Speechless.
