    Abstract
    The thesis entitled “The Analysisi of Thematic Structure in TOEFL Test Reading Comprehension” is an analysis of Textual Function, especially the Thematic Structure found in several selected text in Barron’s Practice Excercises for the TOEFL. The objective of this study is to determine the Theme and Rheme, to determine the types of Themes used, and to find out what theme is the most dominant. In this thesis used Halliday’s theory which defines 4 types of Themes. They are: Topical Theme, Interpersonal Theme, Textual Theme and Multiple Theme. This thesis applies descriptive qualitative method. The data source is obtained by randomly selecting the advertisements. From 5 teks selected which are Mickey Mouse, Federal Policies for Native People, Eugene O’Neill, The Print Revolution, and Hydrogen, there are found 183 clause. After the data is analyzed, there are found 164 Topical theme, 4 Interpersonal Theme, and 78 Textual Theme. From these findings can be concluded that in reading comprehension teks Topical Theme is dominantly used.
     
    Skripsi berjudul “The Analysisi of Thematic Structure in TOEFL Test Reading Comprehension” merupakan suatu analisis tentang fungsi textual, khususnya tentang Tema yang terdapat pada beberapa teks yang dipilih dari buku Barron’s Practice Excercises for the TOEFL . Tujuan penulisan skripsi ini adalah untuk menentukan Tema – Rema pada artikel dan menentukan jenis Tema yang digunakan dan struktur tematiknya, serta menemukan tema dominan. Teori yang digunakan adalah teori Halliday yang membagi tema menjadi 4 jenis, yaitu: Tema Topikal, Tema Interpersonal, Tema Tekstual, dan Tema Majemuk (Multiple) Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data diperoleh dengan pemilihan sample secara acak. Dari 5 teks yang dipilih yaitu Mickey Mouse, Federal Policies fo Native People, Eugene O’Neill, The Print Revolution, dan Hydrogen, terkumpul sebanyak 183 klausa. Setelah data dianalisis, ditemukan bahwa Tema Topikal digunakan sebanyak 164 klausa, Tema Interpersonal sebanyak 4 klausa, Tema Tekstual sebanyak 78 klausa. Dari hasil temuan tersebut maka disimpulkan bahwa pada artikel reading comprehension yang diteliti Tema Topikal digunakan secara dominan.
