An Analysis of Speech Act in Hillary Clinton’s Speech “This Madness Has To Stop”

Abstract

This thesis entitled An Analysis of Speech Act in Hillary Clinton’s Speech “This Madness Has to Stop” was written by focusing on the speech act which were mentioned by Hillary Clinton at the Annual NAACP convention on July 18, 2016. This thesis is attempts to analyze the implied meaning found in every utterance in the speech. There are two primary objectives in the study; first, to find and describe the speech act categories in Hillary Clinton’s speech and second, to find the most dominant category of speech act. Descriptive qualitative method and the theory of speech act by Searle and Yule were applied in the making of this thesis. In speech act theory by Searle and Yule, there are five types of classifications, they are: assertive or representative, directive, commisive, expressive and declarative. Twenty eight sentences were selected from the speech. The findings showed that the overall relative frequency percentages for the selected speech are: commisive 42,9%, assertive 25%, directive 21,4%, and expressive 10,7%. The results showed that Hillary relied more on the sentences that perform commisive act than the other speech acts since she committed to some future actions and promise to make the world fit the words.

Tesis yang berjudul An Analysis of Speech Act in Hillary Clinton’s Speech “This Madness Has to Stop” ini berfokus pada tindak tutur yang di ucapkan oleh Hillary Clinton dalam pidato yang disampaikannya pada acara konvensi tahunan NAACP pada 18 Juli 2016 lalu. Tesis ini mencoba untuk menganalisis makna tersirat yang terdapat dalam setiap ucapan. Ada dua tujuan utama dalam penelitian ini; pertama, untuk menemukan dan menggambarkan kategori tindak tutur yang terdapat di dalam pidato Hillary Clinton dan kedua, untuk menemukan kategori yang paling dominan dari tindak tutur. Metode deskriptif kualitatif serta teori tindak tutur oleh Searle dan Yule diterapkan dalam pembuatan tesis ini. Dalam teori tindak tutur oleh Searle dan Yule, ada 5 jenis klasifikasi, yaitu: asertif/representatif, direktif, komisif, ekspresif, dan deklaratif. Dua puluh delapan kalimat dipilih dari pidato tersebut dan dari hasil temuan menunjukkan bahwa persentase frekuensi relatif keseluruhan nya adalah: komisif 42,9%, asertif 25%, direktif 21,4%, dan ekspresif 10,7%. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Hillary lebih mengandalkan kalimat yang melakukan tindakan komisif dari pada tindak tutur lainnya karena dia berkomitmen untuk beberapa tindakan di masa depan dan berjanji untuk membuat dunia sesuai dengan kata-kata.
