The Impacts of Debate Reasoning in English Competence

Abstract

This thesis entitled “The Impacts of Debate Reasoning in English Competence” is a linguistics study viewed from Language Acquisition. In this thesis the object the writer analyzed is the types of sentence in debate reasoning made by the debaters represented by the transcript of the debate training video conducted on January, 9th 2016 and on April, 16th 2016. The types of sentence in debate reasoning show the impact of English competence. The theory supporting this thesis is a theory proposed by Simon Quinn and Victoria Fromkin, Robert Rodman, & Nina Hyams. The analysis is focused on the types of sentence which are simple sentence, compound sentence, complex sentence, and compound complex sentence. The objective of this study are (1) to find out the impacts of debate reasoning in English competence and (2) to find out the relation between debate reasoning and English competence. This thesis applies qualitative method by Hancock, Elizabeth and Kate. The steps passed in this analysis are collecting the data by preferring debaters, recording the two terms debate training section video, collecting debaters case papers, listening to the debate sections, transcribing the debate sections, examining the data, identifying debaters’ categories, analyzing types of sentences, calculating types of sentences, and concluding the analysis. The result of the analysis is found that the total number of types of sentence made by debaters before debate training 41 simple sentences, 9 compound sentences, 40 complex sentences, 26 compound-complex sentences and after debate training 56 simple sentences, 40 compound sentences, 101 complex sentences, 119 compound-complex sentences.

Skripsi ini berjudul " The Impacts of Debate Reasoning in English Competence" merupakan sebuah kajian ilmu bahasa dari sudut pandang Pemerolehan Bahasa. Dalam skripsi ini objek yang dianalisis adalah jenis kalimat dalam debate reasoning yang dibuat oleh pendebat yang diwakilkan oleh transkrip dari video pelatihan debat yang dibuat pada 9 Januari dan 16 April 2016. Jenis-jenis kalimat yang digunakan didalam debate reasoning menunjukan pengaruh kemampuan bahasa Inggris. Adapun teori yang mendukung skripsi ini adalah teori yang dikemukakan oleh Simon Quinn dan Victoria Fromkin, Robert Rodman, & Nina Hyams. Analisis ini difokuskan pada jenis kalimat, yaitu kalimat sederhana, kalimat majemuk, kalimat kompleks, dan kalimat kompleks majemuk. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) untuk mengetahui dampak dari debate reasoning dalam kompetensi bahasa Inggris dan (2) untuk mengetahui hubungan antara debate reasoning dan kemampuan bahasa Inggris. Skripsi ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dari Hancock, Elizabeth dan Kate. Tahap-tahap yang dilakukan dalam penelitian ini adalah mengumpulkan data dengan memilih pendebat, merekam dua seksi video pelatihan debat, mengumpulkan kertas kasus pendebat, mendengarkan seksi pelatihan debat, mentranskrip video debat, memeriksa data, mengidentifikasi kategori pendepat, menganalisis jenis kalimat, menghitung jenis kalimat, dan menyimpulkan analisis. Hasil dari penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa jumlah jenis kalimat yang dibuat oleh pendebat sebelum pelatihan debat 41 kalimat sederhana, 9 kalimat majemuk, 40 kalimat kompleks, 26 kalimat majemuk kompleks dan setelah pelatihan debat 56 kalimat sederhana, 40 kalimat majemuk, 101 kalimat kompleks, 119 kalimat majemuk kompleks.
