A Syntactical Analysis on Sentence Patterns Used in Coldplay’s Song Lyrics

Abstract

This thesis entitled “A SYNTACTICAL ANALYSIS ON SENTENCE PATTERNS USED IN COLDPLAY’S SONG LYRICS" is a linguistic analysis that discusses about sentence patterns of syntactical field in Coldplay’s song lyrics that uses tree diagram. Coldplay are a British rock band formed in 1996. The theory that used to find sentence patterns refers to Transformational Generative Grammar (TGG) theory by Noam Chomsky. In writing this thesis, the writer uses library research by using descriptive qualitative method by Moleong and Surakhmad. The data source of this thesis are Coldplay’s album entitled Ghost Stories — Limited Deluxe produced in 2014. To collect the data, the writer choose three song lyrics such as Fix You, Atlas, and Paradise. The dominant sentence pattern found in Fix You is S Pron+Aux+V (4 data) with 12.5 %. In Paradise is S NP+VP+P+NP (3 data) with 12.5 % and S Pron+V+P+N (3 data) with 12.5%. In Atlas is S NP+V+Poss.Pron+N (5 data) with 27.77%.

Skripsi yang berjudul “A SYNTACTICAL ANALYSIS ON SENTENCE PATTERNS USED IN COLDPLAY’S SONG LYRICS” ini mengkaji sintaksis pada pola kalimat di lirik lagu Coldplay dengan menggunakan diagram pohon (tree diagram). Coldplay adalah band rock asal Inggris yang terbentuk pada tahun 1966. Teori yang digunakan untuk menemukan pola kalimat dalam skripsi ini adalah teori Transformational Generative Grammar (TGG) dari Noam Chomsky. Dalam penulisan skripsi ini, penulis menerapkan kajian kepustakaan dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dari Moleong dan Surakhmad. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah album Coldplay Ghost Stories — Limited Deluxe yang tercipta pada tahun 2014. Untuk pengumpulan data, penulis memilih tiga lirik lagu yakni Fix You, Paradise dan Atlas. Pola kalimat yang dominan di lirik lagu Fix You adalah S Pron+Aux+V (4 data) dengan 12.5 %, di Paradise adalah S NP+VP+P+NP (3 data) dengan 12.5 %, S Pron+V+P+N (3 data) dengan 12.5%,dan Atlas S NP+V+Poss.Pron+N (5 data) dengan 27.77%.
