    Abstract
    This thesis entitled “An Analysis of Social Stratification and Its Impact on Woman in Jane Austen’s Persuasion”. The writer uses a novel as the object, there is Persuasion (2007) from England. This analysis is about how social stratification as portrayed in Persuasion and its impact on woman. In this thesis, the writer uses theory of sociology of literature and theory of social stratification to analyze the novel. The method that used in writing this thesis is descriptive qualitative method. The findings and analysis that can be found in the novel is about social class differences. The differences are created because of class system which is existed in English society including upper and lower class. Social class differences are measured by based on power, privilege, and prestige which affect the positions, lifestyles, habits and behaviours between upper and lower class so that the gap among both classes seem so prominent. Its impact is inequality of woman’s social status. This inequality influences woman’s thoughts and makes woman has to choose marriage as an option to acquire or increase their social class and status.
     
    Skripsi ini berjudul “An Analysis of Social Stratification and Its Impact on Woman in Jane Austen’s Persuasion”. Penulis menggunakan sebuah novel sebagai objek yaitu novel Persuasion (2007) dari Inggris. Analisis ini membahas tentang bagaimana stratifikasi sosial yang digambarkan dalam novel Persuasion dan dampaknya terhadap wanita. Dalam skripsi ini, penulis menggunakan teori sosiologi sastra dan teori stratifikasi sosial untuk menganalisis novel. Metode yang digunakan dalam menulis skripsi ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Adapun temuan dan analisis yang dapat ditemukan dalam novel tentang perbedaan kelas sosial. Perbedaan ini tercipta karena sistem kelas yang berlaku di masyarakat Inggris yaitu kelas bawah dan kelas atas. Perbedaaan kelas sosial diukur dari kekuasaan atau kekayaan, hak istimewa dan prestise yang mempengaruhi kedudukan, gaya hidup, kebiasaan dan perilaku antara kelas bawah dan kelas atas sehingga kesenjangan antara kedua kelas tersebut begitu mencolok. Dampaknya adalah kesenjangan status sosial wanita. Kesenjangan ini mempengaruhi pemikiran wanita dan membuat wanita harus memilih pernikahan sebagai sebuah pilihan untuk memperoleh atau menaikkan status sosial dan kelas sosial mereka.
