An Analysis of Metaphor in Bible: The Proverbs

Abstract

This paper is entitled An Analysis of Metaphor in Bible: The Proverbs. This paper is an attempt to identify, classify, and analyze the metaphor in the Book of Proverbs. Metaphor is a figurative language that takes two different things which not have relation. The purpose of this research is to get the form of metaphor and the meaning of metaphor in through sentences that had about metaphor. This analysis uses a descriptive method. There are two steps to finish this research. First step is preparation, the writer reads the Book of Proverbs to find out the data. The second step is data collection; the writer collects the metaphor found the proverbs, and then analyzes the meaning of metaphors. According to the theory of Lakoff and Johnson (2003) there are three form metaphors: anthropomorphic metaphor, animal metaphor, and synesthetic metaphor, and according to Kennedy (1983) there are six form figure of speech: metaphor, personification, hyperbole, metonymy, synecdoche and simile which is found in The Proverbs. In The Proverbs writer found 16 metaphors.

Kertaskarya yang berjudul An Analysis of metaphor in Bible: The Proverbs. Kertas karya ini merupakan upaya untuk mengidentifikasi, mengklasifikasikan dan menganalisis metafora dalam Kitab Amsal. Metafora adalah bahasa kiasan yang mengambil dua hal berbeda yang tidak memiliki hubungan. Tujuan penulis adalah untuk mendapatkan bentuk metafora dan makna meafora melalui kalimat yang mengandung metafora. Penelitian ini menggunkan metode deskriptif. Ada dua langkah untuk menyelesaikan penelitian ini. Angkah pertama adalah persiapan, penulis membaca Kitab Amsal untuk mengetahui datanya, kedua adalah mengumpulkan data, penulis mengumpulkan metofora yang ada di Amsal kemudian menganalisis makna metafora tersebut. Ada tiga jenis metafora menurut teori Lakoff dan Johnson (2003) yaitu metafora antropomorfis, metafora hewan, dan metafora sinestik, dan menurut Kennedy (1983) majas terbagi atas enam yaitu metafora, personifikasi, hiperbola, metonomi, synecdoche dan simile yang ditemukan dalam Kitab Amsal.
