The Strategies of Translating Transitive Phrasal Verbs in PS. I Love You Into Indonesian

Abstract

This thesis is entitled The Strategies of Translating Transitive Phrasal Verbs in “PS. I Love You” into Indonesian. Thisresearch focuses on the analysis the Strategies of Translating Transitive Phrasal Verbs in PS. I Love Youinto Indonesian.The methodresearch belongs to descriptive qualitative. The source of data aretwonovel entitled PS I Love You written by Cecelia Ahern which is published by Harper Collins Publisher in 2004 and its translation in Indonesian which is translated by Monica Dwi Chresnayani published by Gramedia Pustaka Utama in 2013 as target text. The strategies are identified according to Mona Baker’s strategies(1992). The strategies are translation by more general word, translation by more neutral/ less expressive word, translation by cultural substitution, translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation, translation by paraphrase using a related words, translation by paraphrase using unrelated words, and translation by omission. There are 56 data of transitive phrasal verbs found in the novel. The highest number is strategy of translation by paraphrase using unrelated words with 20 (35.71%) findings which automatically dominates in the novel. The second strategy is translation by a more neutral/less expressive word with 18 (32.14 %). The third strategy istranslation by a more general word with 12 (21.42%), and the last are translation by paraphrase using a related word and translation by omission with 3 (5.35 %). There is no translation strategies bycultural substitution and translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation.

Strategi diidentifikasi berdasarkan strategi Mona Baker (1992).Strategi yang dimaksud adalah translation by more general word, translation by more neutral/ less expressive word, translation by cultural substitution, translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation, translation by paraphrase using a related words, translation by paraphrase using unrelated words, dantranslation by omission.Ada 56 data yang ditemukan dalam novel. Nilai strategi penerjemahan tertinggi terdapat pada translation by paraphrase using unrelated wordsyaitu 20 (35.71 %) secara langsung menjadi yang dominan dalam novel tersebut. Strategi yang kedua adalah translation by a more neutral/ less expressive worddengan jumlah 18(32.14%), Strategi yang ketiga adalah translation by a more general word dengan jumlah 12(21.42%) dan strategi yang terakhir adalah translation by paraphrase using a related word dan translation by omission dengan jumlah 3(5.35%). Tidak ditemukan data pada strategi translation by cultural substitution dan translation using loan word or loan word plus explanation.
