Sadomasochism in E. L . James’s Fifty Shades of Grey

Abstract

This thesis is entitled Sadomasochism in E. L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey that discusses about sadomasochism, a type of sexual disorder whom the participants often gives or receives sexual pleasure from the infliction or reception of pain and humiliation. E. L. James demonstrates the theme of BDSM in the story Fifty Shades of Grey through the relationship of Christian Grey as a dominant and Anastasia Steele as a submissive. In order to resolve the problems the writer uses theories such as sociology of literature and post-modernism to analyze the phenomena of dominant & submissive to the major characters. After done the research by using the theory, it was found that fifty shades are actually the activities of sadomasochism are bondage, handcuffs, spanking and whipping. Grey represent the dominant who is dominating, Steele represents submissive. Dominant and submissive are dependable to one another as the major theme of the novel and also the study of this thesis.

Skripsi ini berjudul Sadomasochism in E. L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey yang membahas tentang sadomasokisme, gangguan seksual terhadap partisipannya yang memberikan atau menerima kenikmatan seksual dari penderitaan ataupun rasa sakit dan penghinaan. E. L. James menunjukkan tema BDSM dalam cerita Fifty Shades of Grey melalui hubungan Christian Grey sebagai dominan dan Anastasia Steele sebagai submisif. Untuk menganalisis masalah, penulis menggunakan teori sosiosastra dan post-modernisme untuk menganalisis fenomena dominan & submisif terhadap karakter utama. Usai penelitian dilakukan dengan teori-teori yang di atas, maksud dari frase fifty shades ternyata adalah kegiatan-kegiatan sadomasokisme yang berupa perbudakan, pemborgolan, pemukulan dan pencambukan. Grey mencerminkan dominan yang mendominasi, Steele mencerminkan submisif. Dominan dan submisif yang mengandalkan satu sama lain adalah tema utama dari novel dan juga studi skripsi ini.
