The Effectiveness of Mental Model on Improving Student’s Reading Comprehension Ability

Abstract

The title of this thesis is The Effectiveness of Mental Model on Improving Student’s Reading Comprehension Ability. The objectives of the study are : (1) To find out the benefits of Mental Model theory for teacher and students increase on reading comprehenison in Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Medan and (2) To find out the effectiveness of Mental Model on improving students reading comprehension ability. Mental Model theory is the theory that teacher can helped the students on reading comprehension, the mentoring from the teacher is very important in this theory, the teacher should be closer with the students with ask and answer role about the reading text, helped the students who do not understand with the reading text, give a pitcure about topic of the text, give find a way to gain understanding of the topic. In this research, the researcher uses two Science classes, they are IX-6 Science Class is Experiment Class and IX-7 Science Class is Control Class. In this research, the researcher tried to analyze whether there are enhancement scores or not on Experiment Class from pre-test and post-test scores. In analyzing the methods and techniques that are used, the researcher used the Qualitative descriptive method. The findings after doing the research was there are enhancement of scores Experiment Class after treat by Mental Model theory. It showed from the result of average Experiment Class by pre-test is 75 in good chategory and the result of average by post-test after have treat Mental Model theory is 91,75 in excellent chategory. This shown that Mental Model theory can use improve the students reading comprehension ability.

Skripsi ini berjudul The Effectiveness of Mental Model on Improving Student’s Reading Comprehension Ability. Adapun tujuan penelitian ini adalah: (1) Untuk mengetahui keuntungan-keuntungan dari teori Mental Model untuk guru dan siswa dalam meningkatkan pemahaman membaca di sekolah Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Medan dan (2) Untuk mengetahui efektifitas dari teori Mental Model dalam meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman membaca siswa. Teori Mental Model adalah teori yang membantu siswa dalam pemahaman membaca, guru sangat berperan penting dalam teori ini, guru harus lebih dekat dengan siswa dengan cara tanya-jawab mengenai teks bacaan, membantu siswa jika kurang memahami teks, memberikan gambaran kepada siswa mengenai topik teks bacaan, dan memberikan arahan kepada siswa untuk membaca ulang teks agar dapat memahami topik teks bacaan. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan dua kelas IPA yaitu, kelas IX-6 IPA adalah kelas Eksperimen, dan kelas IX-7 IPA adalah kelas Kontrol.Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti berusaha menganalisis apakah ada peningkatan skor terhadap kelas Eksperimen setelah dilakukan pre-test dan post-test. Dalam menganalisis metode dan teknik yang digunakan, peneliti menggunakan Metode Deskriptif Kualitatif. Adapun hasil yang didapatkan setelah melakukan penelitian, peneliti menemukan adanya peningkatan skor terhadap kelas Eksperimen setelah dilakukannya teori Mental Model. Hal ini dapat terlihat dari rata-rata skor pre-test kelas Ekperimen yaitu 75 dalam kategori baik dan nilai rata-rata post-test setelah dilakukannya teori Mental model menjadi 91,75 dalam kategori sangat baik. Ini menunjukkan bahwa teori Mental Model dapat meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman membaca siswa.
