    Abstract

Background: One of the contraceptive methods is progestin-only contraceptive, including medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA). It was found that progestin-only contraceptive medroxyprogesterone acetate can affect the quality and quantity of breastmilk, including free fatty acid (FFA)content in breastmilk. Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the free fatty acid content in breastmilk on breastfeeding women with injection MPA contraception vs without hormonal contraception. Result: In these study, there were no significant differences between two groups regarding of age, parity, and body mass index. The mean total cholesterol in breastfeeding women with MPA injectable contraceptive is 174,45 ± 19,21 and in breastfeeding women without hotmonal contraception is 174,45 ± 19,67 (p=0,799). The mean total FFAs in breastfeeding women with MPA injectable contraceptive is 30,0 ±6,83, whereas in breastfeeding women without hormonal contraception is 32,06 ±8,27 (p=0,718). Conclusion: The use of MPA injectable contraceptive does not affect the quality of breast milk based on the content of free fatty acid.
