Analysis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) Through the Leading Character Portrayed in Robin Roe’s Novel A List of Cages

Abstract

This thesis entitled "Analysis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Through The Leading Character Portrayed in Robin Roe's Novel A List of Cages". This thesis discusses about the symptoms Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in the novel A List of Cages by Robin Roe. The purpose of this thesis is to find out how the symptoms of ADHD are described through the leading character in the novel. This thesis uses to describe the core symptoms of ADHD, namely: Attention, Impulsivity, and Hyperactivity. Adam Blake suffered from ADHD since childhood and continues to adolescence. There are symptoms of ADHD that Adam has, namely: Attention symptom is easily bored; Impulsivity symptoms are agitated and do whatever pops into mind; and the Hyperactivity symptoms are: nonstop talking, do excessive motor activities , and disturbing other people. This thesis uses Russell Barkley's theory to analyze the symptoms in a novel using Literary Psychology. In analyzing this thesis, the writer uses a qualitative descriptive method that presents all data in the form of words and sentences and uses library research as a way to collect data by reading and selecting quotations from the novel A List of Cages. From this research it is found that the leading character in the novel experienced all the three core symptoms of ADHD.

Tesis ini berjudul “ Analysis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Through The Leading Character Portrayed in Robin Roe’s Novel A List of Cages”. Tesis ini membahas tentang gejala-gejala Attention Deficit Hyperactiviy Disorder (ADHD) dalam novel A List of Cages oleh Robin Roe. Tujuan dari skripsi ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana gejala-gejala ADHD yang digambarkan melalui karakter utama dalam novel tersebut. Tesis ini digunakan menggambarkan gejala utama ADHD yakni: Attention, Impulsivity, dan Hyperactivity. Adam Blake menderita ADHD sejak kecil dan terus berlanjut hingga remaja. Adapun gejala ADHD yang dimiliki Adam yaitu: gejala Attention yakni mudah bosan; gejala Impulsivity yakni mudah gelisah dan melakukan apapun yang muncul dalam pikiran; dan gejala Hyperactivity yakni berbicara tanpa henti, melakukan aktivitas motorik yang berlebihan, dan suka mengganggu orang lain. Skripsi ini menggunakan teori Russel Barkley untuk menganalisis gejala-gejala dalam novel menggunakan Psikologi Sastra. Dalam menganalisis skripsi ini, penulis menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif yang mempresentasikan semua data dalam bentuk kata dan kalimat dan menggunakan riset perpustakaan sebagai cara dalam mengumpulkan data dengan membaca dan memilih kutipan dari novel A List of Cages. Dari penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa karakter utama pada novel mengalami ketiga gejala utama dari ADHD.
