| dc.description.abstract | English and Mandailingnese have different total of vowels. English consists of
twelve vowels and Mandailingnese consists of five vowels only. People who
don’t study English will find the difficulties when they produce sound which is
not found in their mother tongue. This study deals with the students’
pronunciation errors of English vowels by the Mandailing students. The
objectives of this study were to describe the pronunciation of English vowels by
students, to find out the types of vowels errors made by the students, and to
explain the causes of vowel errors made by the students. This research was
conducted at the English Department of University Muhammadiyah of Tapanuli
Selatan academic year 2016/2017. This research was focused on the fourth
semester. The reason for choosing that students was besides most of learners there
feel difficult to speak because they are shy, nervous, afraid to make mistake with
their pronunciation, and unconfident to say something in English, most of them
are Mandailingnese. They had studied pronounciation subject in the second
semester. And now, they are in the fourth semester. In their daily life especially in
campus they do not use English but prefer to Indonesian or Mandailingnese. The
population on the fourth semester were 33 students and the sample only
Mandailing students were 16 students. This research design was related to the
descriptive qualitative. Based on the analysis of the data, the error percentage of
in pronouncing English vowel was 378 errors. From the data show that there are
378 errors made by the students in pronuncing English vowels. The other one is
pronunced by the student correctly. So, some of them can pronounce the word
correctly, but some of them still did the pronunciation error. In types or error, both
of interlingual and intralingual are found. The most errors occurs in interlingual
types. While in causes of error, all factors that cause interlingual and intralingual
are also found. And the most occcs in Interference of mother tongue. Most of
students still pronounce the mandailing vowels instead of English vowels. | en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | Bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Mandailing mempunyai perbedaan jumlah huruf vokal.
Bahasa Inggris terdiri dari 12 huruf vokal dan Mandailing terdiri dari lima huruf
vokal. Penelitian ini berhubungan dengan kesalahan mahasiswa dalam
mengucapkan huruf vokal dalam Bahasa Inggris oleh mahasiswa yang berasal
dari Mandailing. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan
kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh mahasiswa, menemukan jenis kesalahan yang
dilakukan oleh mahasiswa, dan menjelaskan penyebab kesalahan yang dilakukan
oleh mahamahasiswa. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Jurusan Bahasa Inggris di
Universitas Muhammadiyah Tapanuli selatan pada tahun ajaran 2016/2017.
Penelitian ini hanya dilakukan pada mahasiswa semester tiga. Populasi mahasiswa
mahamahasiswa yang ada di semester tiga adalah 33 mahasiswa dan sampel ada
16 mahasiswa. Penelitian ini berhubungan dengan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif.
Berdasarkan analisis data, persentase kesalahan yang dilakukan mahasiswa dalam
mengucapkan huruf vokal Bahasa Inggris adalah 378 kesalahan. Persentase dari
jenis kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh mahasiswa adalah 225 kesalahan pada
kesalahan interlingual dan 153 kesalahan pada kesalahan intralingual. Penyebab
kesalahan interlingual muncul 199 kali yang disebabkan oleh pengaruh bahasa ibu
dan 26 kali yang disebabkan oleh transfer bahasa. Sementara penyebab kesalahan
intralingual ada 41 kali pada overgeneralisasi, 24 kali pada ketidaktahuan pada
aturan, 25 kali pada ketidaklengkapan pengaplikasian aturan, dan 63 kalipada
kesalahan konsep. Kesalahan yang paling dominan muncul pada /ɔ:/ yang diganti
menjadi /ɒ/. Jenis kesalahan yang paling dominan adalah kesalahan interlingual.
Dan penyebab kesalahan yang paling dominan adalah disebabkan oleh pengaruh
