    Engagement in Les Brown Speech’s Enough is Enough: Appraisal Analysis

    Abstract
    Pembahasan ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis sistem Appraisal yang berfokus pada engagement yang digunakan dalam pidato Les Brown yang berjudul Enough is Enough. Appraisal analisis merupakan kajian ilmu analisis wacana. Tujuan dari pembahasan ini adalah (i) untuk menemukan tipe engagement yang di gunakan dalam pidato Les Brown berjudul enough is enough dan (ii) untuk menjelaskan bagaimana engagement direalisasikan dalam pidato Les Brown yang berjudul enough is enough. Penulis menggunakan Qualitative Data Analysis dari Miles dan Huberman (2004). Hasil penemuan menunjukkan bahwa ada 45 item monoglossic system (18, 90%) dan 193 heteroglossic system (81, 10%) yang terdiri dari contraction untuk 103 disclaim (43, 27%), 51 proclaim (21, 43%) dan expansion untuk 38 entertain (15, 97%), 1 attribute (0, 42%). Pembicara dominan menggunakan contraction dalam heteroglossic system untuk menunjukkan bahwa pembicara ingin menyampaikan proposisi dan proposal yang pasti dan tegas untuk memotivasi para pendengarnya. Kesimpulannya, tipe yang paling dominan ditemukan yaitu deny yang digunakan untuk memberikan nasehat kepada para pendengar untuk tidak melakukan sesuatu yang sia- sia.
     
    This study aims to analyse the appraisal system focusing on engagement used in Les Brown Speech’s Enough Is Enough. Appraisal analysis is a science study of Discourse Analysis. In terms of this study, there were two research questions must be responded, namely (1) to find out the type of engagement found in Les Brown speech‘s enough is enough, and (2) to explain how engagement realized in Les Brown speech‘s enough is enough. The writer used Qualitative Data Analysis by Miles and Huberman (2014). The findings of the study found there were monoglossic 45 (18,90%) and heteroglossic 193 (81,10%) which consist of contraction: disclaim 103 (43,27%), proclaim 51 (21,43%) and expansion: entertain 38 (15,97%), attribute 1 (0,42%). The speaker dominantly used contraction in heteroglossic. It showed that the speaker wants to convey propositions and proposals that contain definite and firm meaning to motivate the audiences. In conclusion, the most dominant type which found in disclaim namely deny is used to give advices to the audience not to do something in vain.
