The Translation of Phrasal Verbs In Thirteen Reasons Why From English to Indonesian

Abstract

This thesis is entitled The Translation of Phrasal Verbs in Thirteen Reasons Why from English to Indonesian. This thesis analyzes about the types of the phrasal verbs, how those phrasal verbs translating into Indonesian and the problem faced by the translator in translating the phrasal verbs in the novel. In conducting this research, descriptive qualitative method is used. The data are analyze by finding the phrasal verb in the source language and in the target language. In this study, the researcher uses the theory of CelceMurcia and Larsen-Freeman, Mona Baker, and Ghazala. The results of the study shows that (1) there are 18 phrasal verbs which are separable, there are 46 phrasal verbs which are inseparable, and there are 9 phrasal verbs that are always separated. (2) There are 16 phrasal verbs which are translating using idioms of similar meaning and form strategy, 37 phrasal verbs are translating using an idioms of similar meaning but dissimilar form strategy, 20 phrasal verbs are translating by paraphrase strategy, and there is no phrasal verbs translated by omission. (3) The problems in translating the phrasal verb in this novel are the lexical problem; the literal meaning problem there is 1 phrasal verb, the synonymy problem there are 2 phrasal verb, the polysemy problem there are 4 phrasal verbs and the idioms problem, there is 1 phrasal verb. There is 1 phrasal verb which has stylistic problem. Phonological problem and grammatical problem did not found in translating phrasal verbs in the novel.

Skripsi ini berjudul Terjemahan Phrasal Verbs di Thirteen Reasons Why Novel dari Bahasa Inggris ke Bahasa Indonesia. Skripsi ini menganalisis tentang jenisjenis phrasal verbs, bagaimana phrasal verbs diterjemahkan dari bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia dan masalah yang dihadapi oleh penerjemah dalam menerjemahkan phrasal verb yang ada di novel. Metode deskriptif kualitatif digunakan dalam melakukan penelitian ini. Analisis data dilakukan dengan mengumpulkan phrasal verbs dari bahasa sumber dan bahasa sasaran. Pada penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan teori dari CelceMurcia dan Larsen-Freeman, Mona Baker dan Ghazala. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa (1) Ada 18 phrasal verbs yang dapat dipisahkan, 46 phrasal verbs yang tidak dapat dipisahkan, dan ada 9 phrasal verbs yang selalu dipisahkan. (2) Ada 16 phrasal verbs diterjemahkan menggunakan strategi idioms of similar meaning and form (makna sama-bentuk sama), Ada 37 phrasal verbs diterjemahkan menggunakan strategi idioms of similar meaning but dissimilar form (makna sama –bentuk beda), dan ada 20 phrasal verbs diterjemahkan menggunakan strategy paraphrase (parafrase), dan tidak ada phrasal verb yang diterjemahkan menggunakan omission (penghilangan kata). (3) Masalah dalam menerjemahkan phrasal verb pada novel ini adalah masalah leksikal (masalah makna harfiah ada 1 phrasal verb, masalah sinonim ada 2 phrasal verb, masalah polisemi ada 4 phrasal verb, dan masalah idiom ada 1 phrasal verb). Ada 1 phrasal verb yang mempunyai masalah stilistika. Permasalahan dalam pengucapan dan masalah tata bahasa tidak ditemukan dalam menrjemahkan phrasal verbs pada novel.
