Non - Verbal Communication By Autistic Children

Abstract

This thesis entitled „Non-Verbal Communication by Autistic Children‟ was conducted with the aim to find out the components of kinesics as a part of nonverbal communication expressed by autistic children when interacting with their teachers at Sekolah Luar Biasa ABC Taman Pendidikan Islam. Beside that this study also intended to know the meanings of those kinesics components expressed by autistic children when interacting with their teachers. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach by applying kinesics theory by Ray L. Birdwhistell. The data collection techniques were conducted by using non-participant observation techniques and documentation. The documents used to support this study were in the form of photographs and video recorder that showed the communication done by the autistic children with their teachers during the learning process in the class. The results showed that although autistic children cannot interact clearly through verbal communication, they can express their desires through non verbal communication. They can communicate by expressing it through facial expressions, eye contact, body movement, posture and touch. And the non-verbal communication expressed by each autistic child has different meanings.

Skripsi ini berjudul „Non-Verbal Communication by Autistic Children‟ ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui komponen-komponen dari kinesics sebagai bagian dari komunikasi non-verbal yang di lakukan oleh anak autis saat berinteraksi dengan gurunya di Sekolah Luar Biasa ABC Taman Pendidikan Islam. Selain itu penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk mengetahui makna dari komponen-komponen kinesics tersebut yang di utarakan oleh anak autis kepada gurunya. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan menggunakan teori kinesik oleh Ray L. Birdwhistell.Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik observasi non partisipan dan dokumentasi. Dokumen-dokumen yang digunakan untuk mendukung penelitian ini berupa foto dan rekaman video yang menunjukkan komunikasi yang dilakukan oleh anak autis dengan gurunya selama proses pembelajaran di kelas. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa walaupun anak autis tidak bisa berinteraksi dengan jelas melalui komunikasi verbal, mereka dapat mengutarakan keinginannya melalui komunikasi non verbal. Mereka dapat berkomunikasi dengan mengekspresikannya melalui ekspresi wajah, kontak mata, gerak tubuh, postur dan sentuhan. Dan makna dari komunikasi non-verbal yang diekspresikan oleh masing-masing anak autis memiliki arti yang berbeda-beda.
