    Hedges Found in Donald Trump’s Speech on Fighting Terrorism: A Pragmatic Analysis

    Abstract
    The thesis entitled “Hedges Found in Donald Trump‟s Speech on Fighting Terrorism: A Pragmatic Analysis” explains about definitions, goals, scopes, typology of hedging construction which specifically discusses about typology of hedging construction and function of hedge found in Trump‟s speech on fighting terrorism which was held in Ohio on August 15th 2016. The theory applied in analyzing the related data is the one proposed by Lakoff (1972) and Coates (1996). The theory of Lakoff explains about six types of typology of hedging construction while the theory of Coates defines four functions of hedge. The methodological research applied in this thesis is descriptive qualitative method. The steps of research are collecting the data, identifying the data, classifying the data, analyzing the data, tabulating the data and drawing conclusion. After conducting the methods, it is found 66 data; 29 (43.94%) adverbial constructions, 24 (36.36%) modal verb constructions, 7 (10.60%) cognitive verb constructions, and 6 (9.10%) hypothetical constructions. From the analyzed data, it can be concluded that Adverbial Construction becomes the most dominant type of typology of hedging constructions occurred in the speech.
     
    Skripsi ini berjudul “Hedges Found in Donald Trump’s Speech on Fighting terrorism: A Pragmatic Analysis.” Skripsi ini membahas tentang definisi, tujuan, batasan, typology of hedging construction dengan topik yang dikhususkan mengenai ulasan typology of hedging construction dan fungsi hedge yang ditemukan di pidato Donald Trump tentang melawan terorisme yang disampaikan di Ohio pada 15 Agustus 2016. Teori yang digunakan dalam menganalisis data adalah teori yang dikemukakan oleh Lakoff (1972) dan Coates (1996).Teori Lakoff menjelaskan tentang enam macam bentuk typology of hedging construction sedangkan teori Coates menjelaskan tentang empat macam fungsi dari hedge. Metodologi yang digunakan pada skripsi ini adalah metode deskripsi kualitatif. Tahapan metodologi dalam skripsi ini adalah tahapan pengumpulan data, tahapan pengidentifikasian, tahapan pengklasifikasian, analisis, penghitungan, dan tahapan penarikan kesimpulan. Adapun hasil dari analisis data yaitu data yang telah ditemukan berjumlah 66 data dengan rincian 29 (43.94%) data adverbial, 24 (36.36%) data kata kerja bantu, 7 (10.60%) data kata kerja kognitif, dan 6 (9.10%) data kalimat hipotetis, dimana dari hasil analisis data, dapat disimpulkan bahwa jenis hedge yang paling banyak ditemukan di pidato ini yaitu adverbial.
