A Genre Based in Discussion Writing: A Case Study at Department of English University of Sumatera Utara

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the linguistic features and generic structures found in the Semester IV students at Department of English, Faculty if Cultural Studies, University of Sumatera Utara. The data analyzed based on SFL theory of Genre that consists of linguistic features and generic structures proposed by Gerot and Wignel (1994). This Study is a descriptive qualitative research according to Crestwell (2014) theory. The Semester IV students are chosen because in semester IV, the students learned about how to write discussion text and to practice it. In this study the researcher found that the dominant linguistic features of all the texts are the generic human and non-human participants. There are 29 students followed the rules of writing the generic structure, 29 students who followed the rule of writing the arguments for, 29 students who followed the rule of writing the arguments against, and 29 students who followed the rule of writing the conclusion or recommendation. The students have put all the linguistics features in their discussion text based on what they have learned from the teachers.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis fitur linguistik dan struktur generik dari penulisan teks diskusi oleh mahasiswa Semester IV Depeartemen Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Sumatera Utara. Teori SFL yang dipelopori oleh Gerot dan Wignel (1994), tentang Genre, yang mengandung fitur linguistik dan struktur generic teks, digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif Crestwell (2014) digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Mahasiswa semester IV dipilih untuk penelitian ini, karena di semester IV, mahasiswa telah diajar tentang teori penulisan text diskusi dan cara penulisannya. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menemukan bahwa fitur linguistic yang dominan dalam penulisan teks diskusi mahasiswa adalah generic human participants dan generic non-human participants. Terdapat 29 siswa yang memenuhi syarat penulisan struktur generic, 29 siswa yang memenuhi argumen setuju dan argument tidak setuju, dan 29 siswa yang memenuhi syarat penulisan kesimpulan dan rekomendasi. Mahasiswa telah memasukkan fitur linguistik teks diskusi sesuai dengan apa yang telah diajarkan pengajar kepada mereka.
