THE INFLUENCE OF ULTRA VIOLET (UV) RAY ON DECREASING COD, TSS, AND TDS CONTENTS FROM WASTEWATER TREATMENT OF
PALM OIL PLANT
ABSTRACT
The waste of palm oil plant containS high concentration of suspended solids and colloidal materials such as fat, protein, and cellulose. These organic materials will pollute the land or water if they are discharged directly to the environment. The aim of the research is to know the ability of the UV ray by using Fe2+ as catalyst in decreasing COD, TSS, and TDS. The variables which were COD, TSS, and TDS were associated with the variations of time, pH, and air. The method of the research was descriptive and quantitative in order to describe the process of decreasing COD, TSS, and TDS. The data were numerical. The results of the research showed that the decrease of COD is 38,38 %, TSS is 53,57 %, and TDS is 58,52 % with the optimal time of eight hours, pH 9 ± 0.2, and the rate of air 100 I/second. This research was not appropriate to be applied yet in the IPAL (wastewater treatment) unit of Palm Oil Plant since the COD, TSS, and TDS were still above the standard of quality and still in high cost so that they would cause the management of the Palm Oil Plant to raise the cost. This technique is used as an alternative in the process of wastewater of Palm Oil Plant in the future.

ABSTRAK
Air limbah Pabrik Kelapa Sawit (PKS) mengandung bahan organik dengan konsentrasi tinggi, padatan tersuspensi, serta bahan koloid seperti lemak, protein, dan selulosa. Bahan orgnik ini dapat menimbulkan permasalahan lingkungan bila dibuang langsung ke lingkungan. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui kemampuan sinar UV dengan katalis Fe2+ dalam penurunan COD,TSS dan TDS. Variabel yang diamati adalah COD, TSS dan TDS yang dikaitkan dengan variasi waktu, pH dan udara. Metode penelitian yang digunakan deskriptif dan kuantitatif untuk menggambarkan proses penurunan COD, TSS dan TDS serta data yang disajikan bersifat numerik. Hasil penelitian didapat bahwa penurunan COD 38.38 %, TSS 53,57 % dan TDS 58,52 % dengan waktu optimal 8 jam, pH 9±2 dan laju udara 100 l/dtk. Penelitian ini belum layak diaplikasikan di unit Instansi Pengelolaan Air Limbah (IPAL) Pabrik Kelapa Sawit karena nilai COD, TSS dan TDS yang diperoleh masih diatas baku mutu serta dari segi biaya relatif tinggi sehingga akan menaikkan biaya olah Pabrik Kelapa Sawit (PKS). Teknik ini sebagai alternatif dalam pengelolaan air limbah Pabrik Kelapa Sawit (PKS) dimasa yang akan datang.
