dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT
The tight competition in education and the limitation of employment has caused each university to continuously increase its educational quality in order that it can produce qualified graduates in every level and discipline. Irrelevant qualification owned by the graduates in meeting the needs of companies also becomes the complaint of companies (DIKTI, 2008).
Industrial Engineering discipline is especially one of the disciplines which is demanded to increase the educational quality. The limitation of employment which is in line with the discipline of Industrial Engineering and the lack of understanding of companies (users) about Industrial Engineering discipline has caused the graduates to be oriented in finding jobs without prioritizing their future jobs with their discipline. The role of Industrial Engineering is considered limited. Therefore, the Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Sumatera Utara, is demanded to develop a strategy to increase the competence of its graduates so that they are able to compete with and have qualification which is in line with the companies’ needs.
The research was conducted by using questionnaires for the companies (users) which were located in Medan. The method used was analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), SWOT Matrix, and Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM). The companies were asked to evaluate the existing condition of Industrial Engineering USU graduates who had been recruited by these companies and the companies as the users were also expected to give hope for the qualification of the graduates of the Industrial Engineering in the future. The results of the research showed that there were some strategies which could be done by the Department of Industrial Engineering USU to increase its graduates’ competence so that it can be in line with the companies’ expectation. Some of the recommendations were that the Department of Industrial Engineering should give the understanding about the role of the Industrial Engineering to companies to increase their productivity and to design Industrial Engineering’ appropriate vision and mission in order to meet the companies’ expectation toward the graduates’ quality. Through the recommended strategy, it is expected that the Department of Industrial Engineering can design the educational curriculum which is in line with companies’ expectation (users).

Tingginya tingkat persaingan di dunia pendidikan dan keterbatasan lapangan pekerjaan yang tersedia menuntut setiap perguruan tinggi untuk terus meningkatkan kualitas pendidikannya agar mampu menghasilkan lulusan yang berkualitas dalam berbagai tingkatan dan bidang keilmuan. Ketidaksesuaian kualifikasi yang dimiliki oleh lulusan sarjana terhadap kebutuhan perusahaan juga menjadi keluhan bagi perusahaan (DIKTI, 2008).
Disiplin Teknik Industri khususnya merupakan salah satu disiplin ilmu yang dituntut untuk meningkatkan kualitas pendidikannya. Keterbatasan lapangan pekerjaan yang sesuai dengan disiplin ilmu teknik industri dan kurangnya pemahaman perusahaan (user) tentang disiplin teknik industri membuat para lulusan masih berorientasi untuk mencari kerja tanpa memprioritaskan kesesuaian ruang lingkup pekerjaan yang ditekuni terhadap disiplin ilmunya. Peran keilmuan teknik industri dinilai masih terbatas mengingat pemahaman perusahaan tentang disiplin teknik industri masih terbatas. Untuk itu, Departemen Teknik Industri USU dituntut untuk mengembangkan strategi untuk meningkatkan kompetensi lulusannya agar mampu bersaing dan memiliki kualifikasi yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan perusahaan.
Penelitian dilakukan menggunakan kuesioner bagi perusahaan (user) khususnya di Medan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode Analythical Hierarchy Process (AHP), SWOT Matrix dan Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM). Perusahaan diminta untuk menilai kondisi eksisting lulusan teknik industri USU yang pernah direkrut oleh perusahaan dan memberikan harapan perusahaan sebagai user terhadap kualifikasi lulusan teknik industri kedepan. Hasil penelitian tersebut, diperoleh beberapa strategi yang dapat dilakukan oleh Departemen Teknik Industri USU dalam meningkatkan kompetensi para lulusannya agar kualifikasi lulusannya dapat sesuai dengan harapan perusahaan, diantaranya adalah Departemen Teknik Industri harus memberikan pemahaman tentang peran teknik industri bagi perusahaan yang mampu meningkatkan produktivitas, kemudian mendisain visi dan misi teknik industri yang sesuai untuk memenuhi harapan perusahaan terhadap kualitas yang dimiliki oleh lulusan teknik industri. Melalui strategi yang diusulkan, diharapkan dapat memberi usulan bagi Departemen Teknik Industri USU agar dapat mendisain kurikulum pendidikan yang disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan perusahaan (user).
