    Abstract

Palm Oil Mills (POM) generally implement breakdown and preventive basis as the type of maintenance management and technique. However, they are effective for machines equipped with spare unit, but for machines which are not equipped with spare unit, e.g. the fans, they are ineffective. The effective solution in maintenance strategy for fan introduced in this research is the predictive maintenance. The objective of conducting predictive maintenance, in this study was to control the condition of a scaled POM depericarper fan model, as known as backward inclined curve centrifugal fan type 2SWSI, it was carried out by analyzing the squared flanged UKF 206 J bearing vibration under a variety of V-belt tensions. Experimental set-up was done by varying± 3% of the span length between two shafts (Ls), designated for V-belt A-37. Then for each set-up, the belt static tension was calculated base on deflection force method. The belt static tensions were needed to define the static shaft loads (Fst). Afterward, the machine was operated to collect vibration data on bearing and shaft frequency using X-Viber Analyzer, while electrical currents were measured to define the dynamic shaft loads (Fdy). Statistical process data procedures were used to perform a non linear correlation between vibration velocities as dependent variables against static shaft loads Fst as independent variables. The vibration signals data were analyzed using vibration trend analysis, vibration spectra analysis, and rotor orbit trajectories analysis for predictive maintenance purposes. The results show that the fan vibration was out of the alarm limit (2.25 mm/s-RMS) at all condition; the vibration on the bearing cage was detected as the potential cause of fan failure; the lowest vibration was obtained when the deflection force reached 2.0 kg (Fdy = 41,19 kg). According to the research which had been carried out, it was found that the implementation of predictive maintenance strategy using vibration analysis technique is the effective solution for longer life of the machines which are not equipped with spare unit in POM
