dc.description.abstract | Background: Epilepsy is a common neurological disease and has a significant
impact on patients. One of the effects that are often complained about is sleep
disturbances. Poor sleep quality is associated with worsening quality of life,
psychological functioning, and memory. The relationship between epilepsy and
sleep quality is complex and involves many underlying mechanisms.
Purpose: This study aims to determine the relationship between the characteristics
of epilepsy and sleep quality.
Method: This study was an analytical study with a case-control design conducted
at the Neurology Polyclinic of Haji Adam Malik General Hospital and network
hospitals from September 2020 to December 2020. Thirty-four epilepsy patients
who were ≥ 18 years and had consumed anti-epileptic drugs for at least 1 month
were selected consecutively and divided into good and bad sleep quality groups
based on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score. The classification and
duration of epilepsy, the frequency of seizures, and the type and amount of
antiepileptic drugs consumed were assessed as the characteristics of epilepsy. Data
were analyzed using the chi-square test and independent T-test.
Results: Study subjects with good sleep quality have a higher proportion of men
(61.1%), had younger age (25.94 ± 6.73 years), better education and occupation
compared to the poor sleep quality group. The majority of epileptic patients have
normal EEG findings. There was a significant relationship between seizure
frequency, amount, and type of anti-epileptic drugs with sleep quality (p <0.05),
but there was no significant relationship between the classification and duration of
epilepsy with sleep quality (p> 0.05).
Conclusion: There was a significant relationship between seizure frequency,
number, and type of anti-epileptic drugs with sleep quality. | en_US |
| en_US |
