dc.description.abstract | Background. World Health Organization recommended four single-dose
drugs (albendazole, levamisole, mebendazole, and pyrantel pamoate) of soil transmitted helminthiasis (STH). Previous studies showed various and
inconsistent outcome of STH treatment.
Objective. To compare the efficacy of mebendazole and levamisole, alone or
in combination, for the treatment of STH.
Methods. An open, randomized controlled trial was conducted in
Secanggang, North Sumatera on August 2009 until October 2009. School
age children with STH infection were randomized and divided into three
groups. Group I was received single dose mebendazole (500 mg), group II
received single dose levamisole (2.5 mg/kg), and group III received single
dose mebendazole-levamisole. Stool samples were collected at baseline and

Results. STH was diagnosed in 197 children, and the most common one
was ascariasis (96 children, 48.7%), followed by trichuriasis (58 children,
29.4%), 43 children (21.8%) suffered from mixed infections. We found no
hookworm infection. Group I and III had significantly higher efficacy
(P=0.0001) againts STH (egg reduction rate 99.3% and 99.9%; cure rate
92.2% and 98.4%, respectively) at fourth week of treatment.

dc.description.abstract | Latar Belakang. World Health Organization (WHO) merekomendasikan
empat obat antelmintik (albendazole, levamisole, mebendazole dan pyrantel
pamoate) dalam penanganan infeksi soil-tranmitted helminthiasis (STH).
Pengobatan STH pada penelitian sebelumnya menunjukkan hasil yang
bervariasi dan tidak konsisten.
Tujuan. Untuk membandingkan efektivitas pemberian mebendazole dan
levamisole sebagai terapi tunggal atau kombinasi pada pengobatan infeksi
STH.
Metode. Uji klinis acak terbuka yang dilaksanakan di Kecamatan
Secanggang, Kabupaten Langkat, Provinsi Sumatera Utara pada bulan
Agustus sampai Oktober 2009. Anak usia sekolah yang menderita infeksi
STH dibagi tiga kelompok secara acak sederhana. Kelompok I mendapat
mebendazole 500 mg, kelompok II mendapat levamisole 2.5 mg/kg, dan
kelompok III mendapat kombinasi mebendazole-levamisole dosis tunggal.
Tinja diperiksa sebelum pengobatan dan pada minggu ke I, II, III, dan IV
setelah pengobatan dengan metode Kato-Katz. Uji Kruskal-Wallis dan
analisis varian (ANOVA) digunakan untuk melihat hubungan antara jenis
antelmintik dengan kesembuhan dan penurunan jumlah telur.
Hasil. Anak penderita infeksi STH sebanyak 197 anak, dan terbanyak adalah
ascariasis yaitu 96 anak (48.7%), infeksi trichuriasis 58 anak (29.4%), infeksi
gabungan 43 anak (21.8%), sedangkan infeksi cacing tambang tidak
dijumpai. Kelompok I dan III menunjukkan efikasi yang lebih tinggi
(P=0.0001) terhadap infeksi STH (angka penurunan jumlah telur sebesar
99.3% dan 99.9%; angka kesembuhan sebesar 92.2% dan 98.4%) setelah
empat minggu pengobatan.
Kesimpulan. Dosis tunggal mebendazole dan kombinasi dengan levamisole
menunjukkan efektivitas yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan levamisole
dosis tunggal untuk pengobatan infeksi STH. Efikasi tertinggi terlihat setelah
