Sejarah Buruh di Sumatera Timur Tumpuan Kajian : Buruh Wanita Penyapu Jalan di Kotamadya Medan(1975-1993)

Abstract

In general, the purpose of the thesis is to clucidate the history of laborers in East Sumatera under the Dutch colonial government from the migration of the Chinese to the coming of the Javanese. So the focus is to get more information about the historical background of women laborers from Limau Manis Village, Kecamatan Tanjung Morawa, Kabupaten Deli Serdang, who work as street sweepers in Kotamadya Medan (1975-1993). Besides that, the objective of this thesis is to explore the reasons for the willingness of the Javanese women to accept the job of street sweepers in Kotamadya Medan offered from 1975 until the end of 1993. Moreover, the motive of this thesis is to study and analyze the changes that these women laborers experienced after they started their job as street sweepers. From the out come of the research, it is understood that the historical and sociocultural background as well as and the husband's low income cause them to accept this job. Since working there have been a change in the family institution especially that there were able to send their children to high school.

Secara amnya tesis ini bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan sejarah buruh di Sumatera Timur pada masa pentadbiran kolonial Belanda sejak proses datangnya buruh-buruh perkebunan etnik Cina sampai suku kaum Jawa. Tumpuan kajian adalah untuk mengetahui latar belakang sejarah buruh wanita penyapu jalan di Kotamadya Medan (1975-1993) yang berasal dari Desa Limau Manis, Kecamatan Tanjung Morawa, Kabupaten Deli Serdang. Tesis ini juga ingin mengetahui sebab musabab hanya wanita daripada suku kaum Jawa sahaja yang mahu dan bersedia bekerja sebagai penyapu jalan di Kotamadya Medan sejak awal terbukanya pekerjaan ini oleh Jabatan Kebersihan Kotamadya Medan pada tahun 1975 sampai b erakhirny a peny elidikan ini pad a tahun 1993. Selanjutny a tesis ini mengkaji clan menganalisis perubahan-perubahan yang terjadi pada buruh wanita tersebut setelah mereka bekerja. Dari akhir penyelidikan diketahui bahawa latar belakang sejarah dan sosiobudaya serta kurangnya pendapatan suami menyebabkan mereka b e r s e d i a m e n e r i m a p e k e r j a a n i n i .
