    Abstract
Research Analysis of Degradation Angkola with Ecological Function Through interpretation of Land Cover of North Sumatra has been conducted in March to July in 2011 in South Tapanuli and Mandailing Natal district. Interpretation of the results of this study found indications of changes in land cover area Angkola ecosystem. Since 1994-2009 there has been degradation, especially in areas of degraded dry lands forest reach 8480.35 ha (6.58%) and primary swamp forest ha 7943.92 (6.16%), and the decrease of forest area ha area of swamp 243.94 (0.19%). The results of the interpretation of land cover also found an increased area of oil palm plantation area 11.343.90 ha of land area and an increase in the open land area 3037, 85 ha. Ground check results prove that there are 15 Oil Palm Plantations in the areas Other Areas of Use (APL), Forests, Forest Production and Forest Production Conversion. There are 3 and 1 HTI concessions operating in the Limited Production Forest, of the 15 oil palm plantations were located at an altitude of less than 50 meters above sea level that is in a position of ecology at regional water storage. Regions Angkola ecosystems have remaining areas of high conservation value (Hutan bernilai konservasi tinggi) area of 107,127.09 hectares of dry land forests, swamp forests, mangrove swamps and forests.
