    Pengembangan Minyak Sawit dan Produk Turunannya Sebagai Bahan Baku Pelumas Padat (Grease)

    Abstract
    The aim of research was to study possibility of crude palm oil (CPO) and its derivatives as raw material of solid lubricant (grease). The research was divided into two activities i.e. produce metal soap and grease formulation. The metal soap was used as thickener of grease, where as the raw materials of thickener consist of NaOH, CPO, Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD), and Palm Stearin Solid Fraction from IOPRI'S mini fractionation plant. Meanwhile, grease was formulated by direct blending of metal soap and base oil, which were CPO and PFAD. The result of research shown that the optimum NaOH concentration to make metal soap with raw material of CPO, PFAD, and Palm Stearin Fraction were 12.6%, 16.6%, and 9, 1% which gave free alkaline/acid and unsaponification matters value within Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 06-2048-1990 specification. Meanwhile, the grease which have characteristics close to commersial grease with (NLGI No.2) is grease with CPO base oil and use metal soap from PFAD as raw material with composition ratio 85% : 15%. Grease with CPO base oil and use metal soap from CPO as raw material with composition ratio 80% : 20%, is also acceptable both grease formulas have value NLGI 1 and 3.
     
    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji kemungkinan minyak sawit mentah (crude palm oil-CPO) dan produk turunannya untuk dikembangkan menjadi pelumas padat (grease). Tahapan penelitian dibagi menjadi dua kegiatan, yakni pembuatan sabun logam dan pelumas padat. Sabun logam digunakan sebagai pengental pelumas padat, di mana bahan baku pengental terdiri dari, NaOH, CPO, asam lemak sawit distilat (palm Fatty Acid Distillate-PFAD), dan Fraksi Padat Stearin dari Pabrik Minyak Goreng Mini. Sementara itu, pelumas padat dibuat dengan metode pencampuran langsung antara sabun logam dan bahan dasar pelumas padat yang terdiri dari CPO dan PFAD. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan jumlah basa NaOH yang terbaik untuk pembuatan sabun logam dengan bahan baku yang terdiri dari CPO, PFAD, dan Fraksi Padat Stearin Pabrik Minyak Goreng Mini adalah 12,6%, 16,6%, dan 9,1% dengan kandungan asam/basa bebas dan bahan tak tersabunkan sesuai dengan Standar Nasional Indonesia (SNI) 06-2048-1990. Sementara itu, pelumas padat yang dihasilkan mempunyai karakteristik mendekati pelumas padat komersial (National Lubricating Grease Institute-NLGI No.2), yaitu pelumas padat dengan bahan baku CPO yang menggunakan sabun logam dari bahan PFAD dengan perbandingan komposisi 85%: 15%, dan pelumas padat dengan bahan dasar CPO yang menggunakan sabun logam dari CPO dengan perbandingan komposisi 80% : 20% dengan NLGI No.1 dan 3.
