Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)/aspirin, a drug that is widely used, has a variety of properties. One such property permits an antithrombotic use (at low doses are 80-325 mg) indicating treatment of stroke, myocardial infarction, thrombosis, antiphospholipid syndrome and prevention of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia during pregnancy. Long-term use of ASA during pregnancy causes vitamin C deficiency via a mechanism of disturbance absorption, distribution and increased excretion of vitamin C, thereby disrupting the synthesis of proteins (collagen, fibronectin) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of fetal membranes. This study aims to determine histopathological changes in the structural overview (amnion-chorion layer thickness) and immunohistochemical appearance of fibronectin on the fetal membranes of pregnant women who receive low-dose ASA. This study follows a cross sectional design with 81 subjects selected using a consecutive sampling technique. A total of 27 subjects (cases) received low-dose ASA and 54 subjects (control group) without low-dose ASA. The fetal membranes were collected at experiment end as per results delivery and next were to be examined. The results showed that the fetal membranes in the case group (85.18 ± 15.98) were thinner than the control group (111.68 ± 27.19) (p <0.05). Further, the immunohisto-chemical appearance of fibronectin in the case group (1.85 ± 0.53) was weaker than the control group (2.49 ± 0.63) (p <0.05). The provision of long-term low-dose ASA in pregnant women was shown to decrease the thickness of fetal membranes and weaken the immunohistochemical appearance of fibronectin.en_US
