dc.description.abstract | The title of the dissertation is “Mimicry and Hybridity of Dutch Indies Novels: A Post-colonialism Study”. The materials of the research are taken from Max Havelaar written by Multatuli (1839-1887), Berpacu Nasib di Kebun Karet written by M.H. Székely-Lulofs (1899-1958), Manusia Bebas written by Suwarsih Djojopuspito (1912-1977), and Oeroeg written by Hella S. Haasse (1918-2011). The results of the identification are problems relating to the structure of the narratation, mimicry, ambivalence, hybridity, and syncretism. Of the five problems, ambivalence occurs due to the infirmness of mimicry and syncretism occurs due to the flexibility of Western and Eastern hybridization.
Post-colonialism theory and narrative structure theory are used in the analysis by using constructivism paradigm. The aim of using the theories and methodology is to reveal Dutch Indie’s lifestyle as fiction reality and historical event underlying it as a historical reality. For that reason, the study uses text study and library research in justifying description and comparative reality of the fiction and historical reality of colonial nation’s life and colonized country in Dutch-Indie.
Based on the narrative structure, fiction reality of Dutch-Indies novels are chronologically described based on plot, physical structure, race and gender relation, space and time structure, and narration transmission structure. The description of historical reality is focused on the author and the problem faced by bureaucratic elite such as the government, education, and plantation. Fiction reality in the novel is based on the historical reality, such as the practice of corruption, nepotism and Westernization, in accordance to the historical context or the historical context which has moved or disguised the locations and the names of the actors.
The appearance of western and eastern civilization clash in Dutch-Indies novels causes mimicry and hybridity problem to the Dutch and Indonesian. Mimicry in lifestyle which is accepted in Dutch-Indie, such as forming ambivalent personality of colonized nation (Indonesia) and colonial nation (Dutch). The mimicry and the ambivalence place structural and cultural hybridity focused on model and form of leadership. Leadership hybridity causes religious syncretism between Christian Western people and Eastern people who have various religions. The mimicry and hybridity problem in fiction reality and historical reality of Dutch-Indie’s novels are the focus of this post-colonialism research so that it can give a clear description to the roof of the problem of Indonesian nationality which puts forward its local genius in facing the global era. | en_US |
| en_US |
