A Description of Affixation in Alias’ Novel Miss Pesimis

Abstract

Affixation is one of morphological process in language especially dealing with affixes such as prefix, infix and suffix. The present study intents to analyze the types of affixation found in the novel Miss Pesimis either inflection or derivation. the Novel Miss Pesimis has a genre of romance. The present study uses a qualitative method by describing, explaining, and interpreting the collected data of inflectional and derivational suffixes. The resulf of the study shown that there are two types of affixation namely inflectional and derivational affixatikons. Inflectional affixes consists of inflectional prefix and suffix but there is no inflectional prefix found in English language. There are 5 inflectional suffix of verb such as –ate, -age, -ed, -en,and –ing found in Alia’s Novel. There is only one inflectional suffix of adverb namely -ly. There are 9 inflectional suffix of adjective found in the novel Miss Pesimis such as –able, -ary, est-, -ative/ive, -ful, -ical, -ious, -ist and –most. There are 15 inflectional suffix of noun.. Derivational affixes are morphemes that create new words, usually by either changing the meaning and/or the part of speech (i.e., the syntactic category), or both, of the words they are attached. The writer suggests that the study of affixation may be followed up by those researchers by using a larger scale to find the better understanding of affixation particulary in novel such as Miss Pesimis.

Affixasi adalah salah satu proses morfologis dalam bahasa khususnya dalam kaitannya dengan affixes seperti prefix, infix and suffix. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis jenis jenis afiksasi yang ditemukan dalam novel Miss Pesimis baik infleksi maupun derivasi. Novel Miss Pesimis memiliki genre romantis. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan menjelaskan secara deskriptif, memaparkan dan menginterpretasikan data tentang suffix infleksional dan derrivasional. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa ada 2 jenis afiksasi yang ditemukan dalam novel Miss Pesimis yakni afiksasi infleksional dan derivasional. Affix infleksional terdiri dari prefix, dan suffix tetapi tidakada prefiks infeksi yang ditemukan dalam bahasa Inggris. Ada 5 inflectional suffix kata kerja seperti –ate, -age, -ed, -en,dan –ing yang ditemukan dalam novel Miss Pesimis. Hanya ada 1 inflextional suffix kata kerja yang ditemukan dalam novel Miss Pesimis. Ada 9 infleksional suffix kata sifat yang ditemukan dalam novel Miss Pesimis yakni –able, -ary, est-, -ative/ive, -ful, -ical, -ious, -ist and –most. Ada 15 jenis infleksional suffix kata benda yang ditemukan dalam novel Miss Pesimis. Afiks derivasional adalah morfem yang menciptakan kata kata baru, baisanya dengan merubah makna dan atau jenis kata misalnya kategori sintatik atau kedua kata yang saling berlekatan. Penulis menyarankan agar penelitian tentang afiksasi dapat ditindaklanjuti oleh para peneliti lain dengan menggunakan skala penelitian yang lebih luas untuk mendapatkan pemahaman yang lebih baik tentang afiksasi khususnya dalam novel seperti Miss Pesimis.
