Majority of handoffs process was done informally, unstructured, not standardized, inconsistent and incompletely. The unefeective communication during the handoffs process may cause problems to patient's safety, discontinue care of patient or cause loss important information related to continuum of care. Therefore, it is urgently required a standard procedure for effective communication that is more systematic and comprehensive in simple form. Evidences reported that Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation (SBAR)'s methods is effective and widely applied during communication process to inform patient's health condition. Action research has been conducted during 20 weeks in this study. The aimed were to develop a protocol of SBAR's effective communication that can be used as a guideline for nurses in handoffs process during the recovery process of postoperative patients. Data were collected by interview during Focus Group Discussion (FGD), questionnaire, and observation. A total of 15 participant were joined in the study. Data were analyzed using content analysis for qualitative data and descriptive statistic for quantitative data which were occupied pre-post test analysis. The result of this study provide standard operational procedrue of SBAR's effective communication in handoffs process of postoperative pationts at at RSUD Arifin Achmad Pekanbaru. Our study showed a positive impact on nurse' knowledge and skills related to communication during handoffs process. In addition to patients reported outcome, our study showed the improvement of knowledge and satisfaction after implementation of SBAR methods.
