Periodontal disease is characterized by an inflammatory process, resulting destruction of and hard tissues which support teeth. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes act as primary mediators of the host response against proliferating periodatal pathogenic microorganism in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. Activated polymorphonuclear leukocytes produce a large amount of reactive oxygen species which can result in destruction of periodontal tissues.
