Background: Menopause is a physiologic phenomenal, characterized by
decrease of estrogen levels dan increase follicle stimulating hormone. During menopause transition, women with normally experienced physiological changes and from this changes most women frequent complain of osteoporosis. This is silent disorder and significantly effect quality of life menopausal women.
Objective: To determine correlation of serum leptin with bone density in menopausal women.
Methods: This study conducted on February 2017 until the minimum samples were collected. This study conducted against menopausal paramedics at RSUP. H. Adam Malik and RSUD Dr. Pirngadi in Medan. Blood sample was taken 3 cc and after then participant underwent bone density examination using by dual x-ray absorptiometry at RS Setia Budi. Sample exam was done in the Laboratorium Terpadu Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Sumatera Utara. Data were tabulated and analyzed by computerized. Results: The mean serum leptin was higher in obese groups (29,29 +- 7,55ng/ml) compared to normoweight groups (13,94 +-3,18 ng/ml). The mean serum leptin was higher in normal bone density groups (27,68 +- 8,64 ng/ml) comapred to osteopenia (17,27 t 4,91 ng/ml). Both of there were significantly different. The obese groups was dominated by normal bone density results based on body mass index.
Conclusion: There is correlation between serum leptin with bone density (r
= 0,613, p = < 0,001).
