An Analysis of Diction In President Joko Widodo’s Speech at APEC CEO Summit 2014

Abstract

This thesis is entitled ‘An Analysis Of Diction In President Joko Widodo’s Speech At Apec Ceo Summit 2014’ has two objectives. There are to find out types of diction and qualities of diction used in President Joko Widodo Speech text at Apec Ceo Summit 2014, Beijing, China. The method used in this thesis is descriptive qualitative method. The data source used in this thesis was taken from a transcript in English Presentation President Joko Widodo’s Speech at Apec Ceo Summit 2014, Beijing, China. The data is sentence contained type and qualities of diction used in President Joko Widodo Speech text. The theory that is used in this research is Gory’s Keraf theory “Diction and language style” (2009) and Mc Crimmon theory “Writing with a purpose”(1984). The writer found 60 data of types of diction that applied in speech, there are only eight of ten types of diction, there are abstract (7 data), concrete (8 data), common (15 data), special (3 data), scientific (10 data), popular (5 data), foreing (10 data), and loan (2 data). The qualities of diction that are found in speech, there are Learned Word (16 data) and metaphor (2 data).
