Background: Breast Cancer is still a world health problem, either in the developed or
developing worlds. The mortality of BC, mainly caused by systemic metastasis to
distant visceral organs, and followed by function failure those vital structures. The
metastasis process starts with different steps or cells mechanism, and one of the important mechanism is the development of new blood vessels, -neo-angiogenesis-, to support cancer cells with oxygen and nutrition. The angiogenesis of cancer tissue usually correlates with other prognostic or predictive protein markers, such
as : Estrogen Receptor, Progesteron Receptor and expression of HER-2/Neu. In this
study, correlation between VEGFR expression and ER/PR Negativity and HER-2/Neu
Overexpression were investigated.
Method : The research methodology was analytical cross sectional, with Breast Cancer
samples taken from RSUP. H. Adam Malik Medan from october 2013 - December
2013. The BC patients must fulllfill the criteria : complete clinical data availability of
complete pathological data and "good quality" paraffin blocs for I.H.C. The I.H.C.
(VEGFR" ER/PR iller-2Arleu) examination was conducted at Dept' of Patology, School
of Medicine, University of Sumatera Utara in Medan. And Dept' of Pathology, School
of Medicine, University of Gajah Mada, in Yogyakarta.
Chi-Square analysis was performed between those variables (VEGFR & HER-2/Neu;
VEGFR & ER/PR) with p value of 0,005.
Results : There were 40 patients recruited in this study. Majority of them were Intra-
ductal Carcinoma (90%o). Eighty seven point five percent were age 35 or more, 82%
were stage III or IV; 40% histologic-grading III, and 25Vo with Lympho-Vascular
Invasion (LVI). The I.H.C. examination revealed that 35% had overexpression of HER-
2/Neu; 55% ER./PR positive; and 52Yo with VEGF overexpression There were
significant correlation between VEGF expression and IIER-2/Neu overexpression with
P<0.05, and OR= I1.33; and between VEGFR expression and ER /PR negativity with p<
0.05 and OR:0.182.
Conclusion : There were significant linear correlation between VEGFR over expression
and HER-2/Neu overexpression and ER./PR negativity. VEGFR migth have an
important role as prognostic and predictive markers in BC. Further longitudinal study
would be needed to confirm thus role.
